Real stoopid question

Post by Mopar Redneck »

Help me understand thsi one: If you can distill water to use in your wash, and you can use commercially distilled water to make your wash: If you are running teh whoile works anyway, what difference does it make? Why doesn't the distillation of the wash serve do the same thing?

I cant quite figure out what you are asking
but most people don't use distilled water in wash
and distilling wash removes alcohol

You get distilled water by condensing the vapour obtained from boiling plain water.
After you distill a wash, you are not left with distilled water in your pot. You have water plus all the leftover yeast, nutrients, plus anything else you happened to tip in the fermenter.

If that is what you were asking.

Unless your water is really, really, stinky or has enough iron to tint it bright orange, then I wouldn't bother with distilled water.
Cuttin' with it, that's a different story, and is still argued about occasionally.

MOPAR,

You are correct that while distilling wash you are distilling the water at the same time. The reason some might use distilled water in their wash is that they have stuff in their water that might cause off flavors in the finished wash that might carry over. I'm lucky that I have the sweetest well water that anyone could ever want and can skip that problem.

If you can make great tasting beer or wine with your water, don't worry about it.

what ole blue said. some people use distilled water for there ferment because theyre water is not suitable. therefore when they distill the wash the water that comes through is in a sense double distilled. if you have good, nonchlorinated well water i would not worry about it. some people claim that distilled water will dehydrate you but im not sure about that. i do know that some type of processed water will dehydrate you but which one slips my mine at the moment. could be the whiskey talking!

Both of the above are right. I live on the top of the highest hill around, so my well water doesn't get all of the crap that washes down through the aquifer. Even though I'm on a sandstone aquifer (I think) I don't get much iron. The people at the bottom of the same hill have iron out the wazoo.
If you're on a lime aquifer, you're set. Not much iron in those.
