Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

first time ever

Post by inspeedway »

this is so neat!! thank you all for this site!!
i've been wanting to do this since early 70's when miller was building their brewery in eden n.c. - met a pipefitter there from the hills-nw-nc- buy shine from him for 60$ a case (6 gallons in case) and thats when i learned that shine is a sipping substance!! my buddy and i drove 38 miles to and from work every day and that day we got a gallon to see how it was--started drinking from the jug on the way home (like we would beer)- woke up the next morning at 4 am laying on the front porch-didnt know how okie (he was from oklahoma)got home from my house!! chit i didnt even know how i got home chit!!!!learned alot from that experiance!!!!

i put a water/vinegar mix in the boiler (2 gal water(hot) about a pint of v) and fired it up-and with-in 15-18 minutes(2-am wife asleep up stairs) i had steam a-rolling and a smoke alarm going off!!!chit here comes the ole lady (done woke her ass up). probably would have got me ass chewed out but she said i had a grin from ear to ear on me face and was pushing the hell out of the buttons on that thermostat remote thingy trying to get it to shut up!!!she had put a smoke alarm on top of the furnace duct work and it was right over me take off area!! her fault huh?
she got the alarm to shut up and i turned the water to the condenser turned on and instantly the vapor stopped and water started flowing!! read where u wasnt supose to use cooling water when u was doing a clean out first time!!
temp was at 209 and never got over that -thermostat must be 3 degrees off boiling point- of 212- turned water off and veryly cranked it open and turned the heat way down and the temp fluxuated to 208 an209 and water was cold coming out and condenser was cold and coming out like goose eye's ole hand well pump!!!!will drop the arm down a inch or two at a time till i can get it to coming out evenly then when i get to run ujsm! maybe it'll twist and double like goose eye said he's tole!!!
put'n ujsm together tonight and time it ferments i will have time to learn some more about heat'n and cool'n running water through the still!!

-got a 15.5 keg for boiler, lp gas turkey cooker for power,
-10" ss mix'n bowl with 6 fasteners (over kill probably)
-2-1/2 inch brass shower drain(dont do this-too much work) use the 2" kitchen drain like they say here!!!
-3" to 1-1/2 reducer_all they had unless u buy a gross of 3 x2" for 37$ each! put an alembic style egg going back into 2" anyway-ha ha
-1-1/2 " back to 2" fitting-to get back to the 2" for reflux column
-then a 2" to 3/4 for 90 ell, to condenser
-90- 3/4" brass drain ell(might find copper) its got a drain take off screw for draining chit out of water lines and u can drill a hole in it for ure probe!
-then i used 5 foot of3/4 for product path
-then 4' foot of 1" for condenser with (2)-- 1x1x1/2 tees at the ends for cooling lines to fasten to. solder it all together!!!!

uj put this in file 13 if you want or start a book thread!! geezzzee i am a noobie trying to help noobies and when i look at it -chit i am confused reading this stuff!
i'll try to put pics on here to see what i did as a noob!

10 inch bowl

Post by inspeedway »

for noobs like me wondering how to fasten the bowl to boiler! i had to use 6 - 5/16 ss bolts cause ace only had 5 - 1/4 inch bolts and no ss wing nuts!
for 1/4 inch-- drilled a 9/32 hole a put a 5/16 tap through it (over kill - but it did keep the bolts from falling back into the boiler until u get ure nut on it)

Looks great looks like youre well on youre way ..maybe a tad of copper mesh rolled up in the end of that condenser not enough to block anything mind you .. it looks large enough to handle some ..that or maybe a roll or two in the column just before the outlet ..

ferment

Post by inspeedway »

i've messed me first batch of ujsm up!!
only thing i think i did wrong was put 4-5 tsp of crosby&baker fermax yeast nutrient in the disolved sugar and maybe using k1-1116 yeast because i have a bunch of it from my wines. after 30+ hrs i took the lid off -had few good size bubbles but far between times-so i strained some of the chit off the top-stirred it up good (airieate) and pitched another pack of the 1116- tasted sweet with sour after taste-
sg was 1.070 when i started with 2-1/2 gallons of store bought water and 2-1/2 gals of my tap water-de-chlorined - 7 pds of sugar,
afix'in to go get more sugar and some active bakers yeast and start another 5 gals. will put this aside and see what it does unless some one tells me i've ruined it with the nutients or the 1116 yeast!!
this corn is from tsc i thank you people!! oh! the temp was 80 yesterday so i put it on front porch to cool it down a little!!
