Vinegary wash

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Vinegary wash

Post by kingearwig »

so my turbo wash has turned a little vinegary.... I can smell it. I got greedy and went for 17.5 % and after 2 weeks the hydrometer still reads 1% potential but it smells a little sour..... will it taste like poop after I distill it? should I just through this wash out? Thanks in advance

Do a stripping run, then mix some baking soda then run it again. should kill any residual vinegar.

I am running it right now. with my column in the pics I posted a few days ago and a thumper I am getting 172 off of the first distillation and the distillate tastes good. well compared to other turbo washes I have made. I think that I am going to be in for a pleasant surprise when I try ujsm.... I can't wait cause I am happy with my turbo. it tastes better to me than anything I have tried off the shelf.

I think he would notice his mom sitting in his fermenter :D

when it's done fermenting, just run it.

Losing a wash for 1% isn't a very good trade off.

As I say early and often, you can't rush a good spirit. Shortcuts will only hurt you. Getting greedy over trying to attain the highest possible proof in a wash can often bite you. A 2 week ferment, I could have run at least 2, maybe 3 washes at lower proof by then.

even with my limited experience I am beginning to learn that on my own Uncle Jesse. its a bit like my other hobby of cultivating bonsai trees, only this hobby makes me stumble around stupified once in a while. Oh and I could burn my house down if I am not careful. 8^)

I learn best from my mistakes. And I've made some good ones.

Never forget the time I "carbonated" beer with citric acid instead of corn sugar...
