Replacing Lightbulbs
I just got an email from ace hardware about LED lightbulbs. The add says "Imagine not changing a light bulb for 22 years?"
This made me think, In some cases a child born today will be old enough to legally drink before they will learn to change a light bulb. That means there will have to be videos and T.V. shows explaining to these kids exactly how to change a light bulb Something that is so basic to most of us that we don't even think about it. Will they even know how to remove them? or know it may shock them if they stick their fingers in a light socket?
I wonder what other simple fundamental things our children and grandchildren will not be able to do because of technology?

That's true, communication skills are already suffering. Schools no longer teach cursive as a part of writing. They may not even be able to read historic documents. Lots of words have now been replaced with undecipherable hieroglyphs. I took my car in for an oil change one day and they tuned off the automatic headlights. It took me 10 minutes of reading through the owners manual to figure out which one of the 5 hieroglyphs was the one I wanted.jedneck wrote:Conversation without using there thumbs. Well, I will say this much, I changed a light bulb over our kitchen sink with an LED on January 1st or 2nd 2011. The switch has never been turned off in nearly 5 years. So that bulb has lasted more than 43,000 hours.bearriver wrote:I remain fiercely sceptical.

The LED's are more efficient and last longer.
Something they never mention about LED lights. Compared to incandescent or florescent lights.
Their much more likely to be destroyed by a power surge or nearby lightning strike.

Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
I have a horde of lightbulbs stashed away. The most problematic are the 100W because I use them for photographing and in my garage but now they are getting harder to find. I walked into the local Dollar Tree the other day and found 100W incandescent so I bought some and my wife thought I was crazy but the lights in my garage burnt out and those damn 60W bulbs suck out there. I'm going to stop in the next few days and buy more. I've been working on replacing the bulbs that stay on all the time with LEDs tho. Lowe's had them for 99 cents on black Friday so I bought a bunch.
I once bought a big box of lightbulbs at an auction for $1. People were looking at me and asking why I even bought those but I didn't have to pay for a light bulb for another 8 years, so I thought it was well worth the $1.

I've got a couple boxes of assorted sized light bulbs. Not for the lighting, but for use as high power resistors

ive been thinking about switching all my bulbs to led just to save some cash.

We look at these types of conveniences from our own perspectives, older and more experienced, unfortunately the younger generations don't have that foundation of experience. I think this is all part of the further de-skilling of our societycranky wrote:I wonder what other simple fundamental things our children and grandchildren will not be able to do because of technology?
As long as pop bottles have screw on caps they should be able to un-screw a light bulb I hope, now as for not sticking their finger in the socket? One thing for sure, that sure helps in skill building
There appears to be an inverse relationship between tangible distilling problems and possible drinking problems...
Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
The led itself is amazingly efficient. The power supply that is used to convert 110v to the 5-12volt the led needs is not as bullet proof.
I have had lots of led bulbs fail...now it's the power supply the burns up.

Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
I'll go led when they are cheaper. At $30 a bulb I can't justify the expense. Rather pay 80c for and old one. Haha
Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
As time marches on we change our knowledge base. Sure we can type an email download stuff replace light bulbs and run large systems controlled by computer. Yet how much of the population knows how to set a snare find wild edibles churn butter butcher meat tan hides make soap find clean water when to plant crops how to rotate crops how to preserve food or make water go up hill? We used to have to remember knowledge and keep using it. Now everybody has Google in their pocket with no need or urgency to keep info stored in their memory. If/when the power grid goes down in the modern world hundreds of millions of people will die due to lack of knowledge.

T-8 is what I'm using in the shop also. Almost all the light's in the house are compact florescent.Coyote wrote:We have gone to T-8 48" in all three shops.

Coyote
I put a compact florescent in front of the shop for a night light in 1999.
It ran 24 -7 until getting smashed by a front end loader in 2013. That's got to be a record.
It was dim, yellow and had a pound or so of dirt daubers on the reflector.
Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
if i could figure out how to post an LED ROI calculator spreadsheet on here, you would all own LED tomorrow.
not including labour to change, average led x-over break even is about 10 months, at 5 hours a day.
it is astounding how much less power they use. i have changed everything to 3000k led.
plus you can proudly reduce your impact on the global warming myth.

I will say around here LEDs have dropped considerably and are now quite affordable.HDNB wrote:if i could figure out how to post an LED ROI calculator spreadsheet on here, you would all own LED tomorrow.

Ive got a hydroponic garden and have looked at replacing the HID lighting. I'm still using those old style 1000w magnetic ballasts that you see in warehouses.
Anyways, a few years back the quote I got was in the neighborhood of 60 grand for LEDs. Now its about 7k for the same stuff. Maybe in 10 more years

Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
I can't run anything but LED. Being off grid I don't have the energy to waste on other lights.
But this is not the only problem with future generations knowledge. More and more are going to college or other schools. Instead of learning trades. It becoming harder and harder to find service technicians who actually have mechanical knowledge. We are living in a throw away world. Where everything is now being made with the assumption it will be thrown away instead of fixed.
And they can claim the LEDs will last for ever. Who do you know that will keep a receipt for that long? And the receipts being thermal won't last that long even if you kept it and knew where you put that damn thing. So who is going to prove them wrong on their claims of longevity?

Nice to see you Mr P
You are correct there. I bought a part for my 99 Taurus in 2000 with a lifetime warrantee, When the part went bad in 2007 I still had the receipt but the ink had all vanished and my phone number had changed so many times I had no idea what it was when I bought the part.

ebay. 100w. 40 bucks a shot. full sectrum 6000k light. thats pretty much a 1/1 replacement ratio-cheaper than a metal halide bulb.bearriver wrote:Ive got a hydroponic garden and have looked at replacing the HID lighting. if you use 10, assuming .10$/kwh, thats about 14 dollars a day less power consumed, on a 15hr grow cycle... each one paid for in 3 days, all 10 in 30days!

Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
HDNB, you piqued my interest!
I use 7kw of HID lighting and that pulls 90 kwh per day with the photoperiod. Rates run 11 cents so I am at currently spending $9.90 USD per day for electricity on lighting.
An LED source efficiency can be up to 50 lumens per watts higher than my HID lighting which gets about 90 lumens per watt. That is about a %36 reduction in power consumption at the same lumen levels. (holy cow )
So by switching to LEDs I would save a total of $1,314 every year and produce the same quantity of lumens.
To get the same lumens in my garden I would need 45 of those 100 watt panels. At $40 each that is $1,800 for the equipment.
So by my math those lights would pay for themselves after year once you factor in the lamps. The lamps costs $450 every year because they need to be replaced every 6 months due to lost lumens.

Re: Replacing Lightbulbs
I grow almost anything that I can PF, but only have spoken here about growing food which is an honest representation of what I like to do.
However, yes it is expensive growing indoors. Last year I lived in the country and had a nice outdoor plot.. There was no need for indoor hydroponics. This is a picture of me working the soil after the thaw... Anyways, this year I live in a cul-de-sac and can't grow anything outside due to a really bad northern exposure and space limitations.
LED lighting is definitely going to be something I will look at in 2016. Either than or I want to lease a small plot somewhere nearby where I can raise critters and grow things. Still expensive but I like working outside.
