ss scrubbers
any cheap/fast/easy way to test ss scrubbers?
just got got some ss scrubbers from the market the magnet do stick on them so i cant tell from that.
would just soak it in water and let it stand on the counter for the night be enough to test it?
or should i just try them at the bottom of the column to see if they rust?

I'd wet one, throw in a bucket and have a look at it in a couple of days.....that way nothing is lost or contaminated.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
Seriously, sit it half in and half out of some water for 2-3 days, exposed to open air.

Not sure about a scrubber but in high school chem class we soaked a nail as an experiment. Gone in a few days. I figure a non ss scrubber will do the same. Got both on hand so I will find out and report.if i got out tomorrow il get some pepsi and try that as well, any time line on the pepsi test?
Don't know how I remember this...that was a very, very, long time ago.

thank you all.
over 2 days now no rust to be seen
.(went the soaking in water way)
yesterday packed the rest of my column with them.
was able to keep a steady 78 but hardly.(to keep it on the 78 i had to collect at like 250ml/h.
i suspect the cycling of my hot plate.
need to build a controller now.

Depends a bit on what type of still you are running but - a still will normally not go any hotter than the strength of alcohol in the wash will allow.
If it wants to run hot on the first run, let it, then run your product a second time. It will then run cooler because of the increased alcohol percentage in your boiler and you will be able to run a bit faster and make better cuts.
Cheers.

Don't get too hung up on the exact temperature, it can vary depending a number of factors. Anywhere between 78-79 is fine for your first run (during the hearts section of the run).
You should be able to get at least 500-600 ml an hour of clean 94-95% from that tall column.
How much heat did you put into it?
Are you sure the heat source is cycling?
What was the resolution on your thermometer?
