Hi,
I've seen people talking about aging in old brandy barrels and new barrels (with this toast or that) but wasn't sure if using an old red wine barrel would be an awesome idea or an awesome waste of good booze.
Thank you,
Shawn

Do it.
Fill the barrel with water to swell it first. And when you drain it, sample a little of the water...see how it tastes. That is a little of the flavor you'll be imparting into your whiskey. It usually will add a little sweetness and a mild fruitiness. It will age nicely with whiskey though. Some producers even try to age in repurposed sherry barrels for that very reason.

Edradour barolo cask is a scotch matured in barrels used for red wine. It's awesome!
