Adding 240 while contractor is there
I know I need to do my own research but I'm in a bit of a unique situation as I have a contractor at my house now finishing up a basement bathroom. I ask him about adding a 240v outlet in my brew area and he said no problem but now is the time to do it before he closes up the wall (finished basement). There are a few extra slots in the panel and we have the drywall around the panel opened up since we needed an extra circuit in the bathroom.
Anyway, I'm currently running my father's 30L copper alembic on a 1500w hotplate but plan to upgrade to a larger boiler at some point in the future. I like electric for indoor wintertime distilling but it just dawned on me if I ever want 240 in my brew area, now is the time to do it and I will probably go ahead and add another 120 on a separate circuit as well. Anything in particular I should ask for, plug type, etc.?
Thanks and I promise to do my homework but won't be able to fully wrap my head around all the particulars of 240v heating options before the contractor gets this wall and panel area closed up.

30 amp twist lock. Set a 30 amp breaker. 10/4 minimum wire.

Just my opinion but I would make sure he runs 4 conductor for your 240v wire , it will make wire ring up fans in your controller simpler . It is code in my state to run it that way but your state may vary . Good luck on the upgrade !

Thanks guys! That's perfect. I'll tell him to run 10/4 on a 30A breaker with a twist-lock receptacle.

For sure. This guy has done a lot of work with me and is time+materials on a day-rate anyway so it isn't going to cost me anything really other than material costs. Super excited about being able to bring >5 gallons up to temp in under 2 hours
Thanks again.

If you can swing the change, have him put in a GFCI breaker. I have 50a in my garage and plug a 50a spa panel into that with a built in GFCI breaker as it was cheaper and is only used for brewing/stilling.

It's not too late, that's a good idea also. I already switched the 120s in that area out to GFCI but we can just use a GFCI breaker for the 240. Will cost a little more but probably worth it.

How's 20 minutes or less with 5500 watt on 240 volt with a 6 gallon load.. I'm up to speed in 18 minutes for stripping, and about 14 minutes with spirit run of 6 gallon at 35% using a 7 gal keg..bhh wrote:Super excited about being able to bring >5 gallons up to temp in under 2 hours

That's sounds absolutely amazing but I'll have to change up my routine, which is now...StillerBoy wrote:How's 20 minutes or less with 5500 watt on 240 volt with a 6 gallon load.. I'm up to speed in 18 minutes for stripping, and about 14 minutes with spirit run of 6 gallon at 35% using a 7 gal keg..
