My regular forum for casting has a post in it about selling ingots.. well, the talk came 'round to scrap yards and all the folk sellin stolen stuff (I remember the stories way back about sellin manhole covers for drug money).. Scrapyards are getting more picky-er, now.. either that or law is siding with people getting robbed, cuz they're watchful of who ya are, etc.. etc.. Some places go as far as documenting license numbers and ID you!

Which is okay, but can't imagine losing the extra buck just cuz some asshole politician thinks there oughtta be a law against us common folk sellin scrap. (Read that as: Soon, they'll want us to get permits for it)

My mind used to go a flutter e'er time somebody gave me a car, cuz I'd strip it, bust it up for the aluminum and cast with it, then sell the car to the dudes with a crusher for 40 bucks. Now, I can make $150/ton for them?? Wow! (More, if I strip the wiring and cats and sell em separate) (Damn good thing EPA doesn't care about ND cuz burning insulation off wires is YUK!)

There's a machinist forum I used to go to that told of countless other things getting stolen cuz scrap is so high... Bastards will steal A/C units from you cuz they're easy pickin's.. Some guys have ripped irrigation lines out for the wiring they contain (we don't have them here, but ya see lots down South..) That's gotta do a lot of damage! Ground wires off o' poles.. PLUMBING from houses! 'Magine comin home to water runnin in and no pipe to even clamp shut?? Barbed Fricking Wire! They'll steal wire off your fence, and the posts, too, if they're man enough to pull them. (most stay behind)...

Some Natives from the rez not too far from here died as a result of trying to relieve a farm shop of its copper wiring.. Too bad it was live. Don't know if the farm owner got sued yet or not.. If it were Calif or NY, tho, Ol' SOKOLOVE would o' been on that case like steenk on sheet.

That's why you do two things:
1)Electrify said wire. Not just a little sting, we're talking grass burning voltage, here. Easy to find the criminal when he's charred to a crisp with a pair of wire cutters in his hand.
2) Use wood posts. Wood ain't worth nutin', and locust tree poles will last much longer than metal will.
