Water Recycling

Assume you circulate the cooling water and have a 1.000l buffer.

Problem is that after a few weeks the water spoils. Bad smell etc.

I dont want to add aggressive products such as bleach or vinegar, fearing it might affect the copper.

Any solution or additive that is neutral and will preserve the water ?
