Another Sign of The Apocalypse

Post by TDick »

I am not a prepper but many things help me understand those that are.
I don't know about the rest of the HD world, but the United States seems be headed downhill as fast as millenials can do anything.
(NOT talking politics)
But here is the first of what I'm talking about. Be sure and show examples as you unfortunately encounter them.

A few years ago the boss had to fire a gal for repeatedly sleeping at her station.
Her argument was, "I wasn't sleeping. I was dozing."

that is sooooo true. we hired a kid as a helper, 21 years old. he worked with a crew lead for 10 whole days before he quit with a (i shit you not) 3 page type written letter of resignation, outlining what a shit company we were and my own personal incompetence was so magnificent that it was a surprise i could get my teeth brushed in the morning and the entire staff of the company were moronic neanderthals, and we wouldn't last a month without his help and guidance.
That was 3 years ago in our 26th year of operation and most of the lead guys have been with the company since 1990's.

by some miracle, we have persevered.

strange, he had my number, but insulting all the other guys was totally uncalled for.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

We have raised 6 kids.
All but one is either working at a job while going to school, working at a job, being a full time mom with a home of their own.
I really don't understand the people who believe and act like they are entitled, no one owes anyone anything but to be civil and that is questionable if you are an asshole.

There is some truth to this. I don't think it's one particular generation though. I realized this when I was teaching high school in the mid 90's, and my wife sees it more now with the kids she's teaching. There is indeed a sense of entitlement. I blame parents. The rest is all decoration.

Not just parents, although I will accept my share of the blame.
"Another Sign" - because of issues with our local schools, I sucked it up and put two sons in the best private school in town for two years, I think 7th & 8th grades.
One thing I noticed. My handwriting is not great, but they could (can) not write in cursive - what I just call "WRITING" at ALL!
and they didn't care because they don't have to write anything.
So I go see the Dean of the school, who I knew, and told him my concerns.ab
He laughed a bit and agreed that "no, they can't write and aren't really taught to."
:problem:
My concerns were duly noted but there would be no change in the expensive curriculum.
Ten years later they have graduated from college, cannot legibly sign their names and no one seems to give a damn but me.
:x

anyway, here's two other generations to ponder:

Young people are entertaining
They come in all sizes, shapes and colors
The only difference between them and us, is years of experience.
The world isn't coming to an end, it's only changing.

Did y'all ever notice that little rectangular box stuck to their hand 24/7 ???
How can you expect them to do a job with only one hand?

All joking aside....this is a serious situation.

My dad (born 1903) would have been astounded to see so many people walking along with a vacant expression, a hand over their ear and muttering, apparently, to themselves.

Maybe I just refuse to act my age? I just dont feel so old and cranky.
The video in the OP looks like it was CREATED by a millenial.
Sure, finding examples of how young people suck is pretty easy. Has been for 1000 years. Their art, their technology, usually their music, it's been disappointing the previous generation since the bronze age. Yet time marches on. Some young people grow up and immediately do awesome shit. Some of them suck at first, and figure it out later. Many more end up not so different from their parents.

I'm currently far more concerned about what my and my parent's generation are doing / have done than I am worried about my kid's generation, much less the millenials in between us.

The funny thing about millenials is the word itself has become a punchline. The millenials are the chick in the OP video. Somehow the 32 year old mechanic, farmer, or welder arent called millenials.

I imagine we probably have some pretty cool "millenial" HDers. Bet you can spot them because they're the ones always accessing hd on their smart phones ;)

I had a basement tenant who was a guy in his mid 20s, seemed like a decent kid just a bit stupid. After a few months something's started to raise red flags. He worked as a landscaper, had his own buisiness until he lost his license for impaired driving, he jumped in his work truck to drive 2min to the McDonald's drive thru because he was too lazy to walk, then road raged on an unmarked police car for driving too slow and got pulled over, he now couldn't work so he had his girlfriend and dad drive him all over. He claimed he wasn't at fault and didn't act in the wrong. Used to flick his cigarette butts all over the back yard and even used to find them on my car, had a butt tin and after I kept asking him not to do that he just kept it up till I banned him from smoking on the property, he then flicked his butts in the neighbors veggie garden and called the old guy a crybaby when he was asked to stop. Borrowed my tools and refused to return them, also had borrowed my garage to do the brakes on his girlriends car and left the garage door open while going for an hour test drive. I came home from Mexico once to find a blue short bus parked in my backyard and my car was boxed in which he said he was renting the space to a neighbor. Electrocuted himself and started a fire trying to install new lighting fixtures. At this point I evicted him and his dad called me up telling me I have to right and his son is an angel, after I listed the reasons he just told me that I should let him do what he wants because he's a smart boy and that's how he was raised. So I told off his dad and his mother then she phoned me, i told both of them off for being shitty parents and raising such a shitty son who at his age should've learned respect, responsibility and not to get his parents to fight his battles. I had to repaint the basement suit, he was tagging the walls, clean up 100s of cigarette butts and explain to his parents why he didnt get his damage deposit back. They actually threatened me with legal action and claimed that the angel son they raised would never tag up his walls or act so irresponsibly. I dont blame millenials at all, I blame the parents who raise such people. One of my favorite coworkers is 25, I enjoy talking to him, I have shared accommodation with him when away working and I've even introduced him to distilling and homebrewing. It's all about parenting.

there is always the other side of the story. we got a 20 yr old kid doing some work for us. he's never late, never cuts early and tries really hard to learn everything possible. the customers love him and his co workers respect him.
i recommended him today for a raise, the company stepped up for 10% and i got to shake his hand and thank him for a job well done and tell him that everyone was very proud of him.
the kid was beaming so bright almost had a tear in his eye.
maybe it was dust in the wind my eyes were bugging me a bit too.
I finally quit drinking for good.

Fortunate , I am , To live in an area where some youngsters still have a work ethic . You just have to seek them out or trust fate for them to find you . In my case it was Fate . Couple of coon hunters treed a coon in the edge of my yard last fall at some where around late 0Dark Thirty . I slid out (armed , of course) to see who was in my yard . Settlement of my Father's estate was still up in the air at the time . I planted a seed with these guys about improving their statio .
They been patch farming for several years and wearing themselves out in the process . The idea of a 100 acre farm that they could actuall do something with took root and they are now keeping up my place to their advantage better than I could .
I have 4 children of my own that are all business professionals .
Cream rises to the top . You just have to be particular how deep you skim with the dipper . Blue John harbors in the lower levels .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .

My dad was born in 1903 and left the tiny country school at maybe 11 or 12. He was a good scholar, said he got more elephant stamps in his work book than anyone else.
Though his brother had to work hard at it; the teacher used to whack him with a big ruler on the back of his hands that were already hurting with chilblains from walking or riding to school in the frost.
Anyway Dad knew the farming and read the paper; but back in the day I got him a subscription to Reader's Digest (way before the internet) for a few years until his sight got too bad.
He loved that and learnt a hell of a lot from it.

My grandpa died in 1986. He made corn and sugar shine. I doubt he woulda owned a computer or paid for internet access, but he sure coulda benefitted from HD! Not that he made rotgut, he was not commercial by local standards, though by stories he was the grey market sugar hookup for half the state. But all he knew was what he saw from the commercial moonshiners, and what little whiskey culture had survived prohibition word of mouth. Which wasn't much.
Sad thing was he grew corn, yet used mostly sugar  Booner's woulda blown his damn mind, and made half the county a lot happier at Christmas time when he would drive around and hand out jars. Every christmas eve after the kids (and the sheriff!) were asleep he'd load the pickup with a few cases. Pull up into one yard, wait for the menfolk to come out. He'd pass a jar and chat, when it came back around he'd tell 'em to keep it and have a merry christmas. Then drive on to the next house.
Granny would yell at him when he finally came home, but he'd shush her so as to not wake the grandkids and tell her she could yell at him all she wanted outside. Where of course he'd saved the last jar for her and they'd sit on the tail gate or in the wash house if it was cold till she'd had her fill ("for her arthritis"). Wont no drinkin in grannies house, but the wash house didnt count :)
Good stories. Can't help imagining it woulda been even better if he knew how to make "real" whiskey! My cousin learned from grandpa, and still makes mediocre whiskey, though his welches brandy is pretty good. But thank god one of grandpa's heirs found computers, smart phones, the internet, and good whiskey; I like to think he'd be proud :)
