pic 1. The correct measurement is at the bottom of the miniscus, not the top.

p.s. - Danespirit wrote a great thread about using the P&T hydrometer. There’s a hotlink in my signature. Have a look...

So eye level at the top of the Meniscus?or eye Level at the bottom of the meniscus?? WHICH PICTURE IS CORRECT? Proof tralle 1 or proof tralle 2?

I use an old frog hunting trick to help me read these. First, SS is exactly correct.
Movement of my head up/down helps my brain see the proper line. It’s all about perspective, and sitting in one place only gives you one perspective. Look at the top and move your head up and down slowly. Your brain will tell you what line is just at the bottom of the maniscus.

I answered this. Go reread my post.

Bottom of the meniscus but don't sweat the small stuff. Unless you work in a lab or a commercial distillery a point or two doesn't really matter.

I see it as 87 1/4 so 85 1/4 + or - a few points
I wouldn't sweat a couple of points

Oh and it's really difficult to tell from only one perspective that the photo allows

You choose.
We’ve told you how to read the hydrometer...now, use YOUR eyes and read to correct one.
This game is getting old very fast.

Duckhunter, you want the predominant surface, not the edge where the meniscus typically rises up along the wall of the tube or the alcoholometer due to surface tension. Look for the main flat surface, wherever that is, and that's what you should visually project against your alcoholometer. In your initial post, the right plane to look for your titled Proof tralle 2, but it was the top image (thus SS told you the first image).
With water (and our distillates), the meniscus will be at the bottom, unless you're carefully on the precipice of overflowing a vessel (which can create a positive meniscus). Some liquids have the opposite trend. Check our this link for an example and someone else's explanation:

My palate can't tell the difference between 85 and 90% so worrying about a 2% difference in the reading is personally needless - I can get blitzed on less. More important, the traille devices are calibrated for a specific temp and the wrong temperature can make for measurement errors way outside that 1-2% difference between the top/bottom of the meniscus and errors caused by parallax.
