Sources of Molasses

Post by Budapest8485 »

I am struggling to find molasses by the gallon or 5 gallon amount in the USA. I can mail order it, but would prefer to buy something local. Any suggestions?

Do you have a TSC nearby? Take a look: http://www.tractorsupply.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
If not, check a local feed store. I live in a fairly urban area and we have a good local feed store in town.
Good Luck!

Cheers.

Yes, there's one not too far away. I wonder if this has preservatives in it: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produ ... _vc=-10005

Tater should be able to help you out with the feed grade molasses, maybe PM him.
I used a feed grade molasses that I picked up from the local feed store. According to the owner it had natural sulfur in it, but no preservatives.
You can always contact the manufacturer.
I remember someone on here posting an image of the same brand molasses not to long ago.
Has anyone else used this?
TSC, at least my local one, is good about ordering items in for me that they normally don’t carry.
Local bakers are also a good source for larger (5 gallon) quantities.

GOLDEN BARREL Is the cheapest I've found, even with delivery. If your local,(Pennsylvania) you can pick it up.
Also consider their SUPREME baking molasses. It's more money, but the additional sugar content more than makes up for it.

Golden barrel from web restaurant supply is the best deal I found. You can buy in gallons or 5 gallon pails.

Haven’t bought in a while but I am thinking I pay less than what has been listed below for 3 gallons of blackstrap molasses in my local feed store.

I've used the Evolved Habitats molasses per the suggestion of ShineOn. It took about 10 days to finish at ~80°F.

Good post!

I happen to be driving down there today to grab 30 gallons  . They are the best, and I always get the supreme. I have a 5 gallon barrel to start filling.

I love my rum season

Lots of guys have used Evolved Habits with no issues. This can be bought from any tractor supply, Cabelas or Southern States Co Op for around $9 a pale from memory. It's 2 years since I've been to the states and so that long since I've seen it but I'd imagine it would not have gone up much if at all since then.
What sort of recipe are you thinking of following with it?

I have not done this yet, but when the time comes I'm going to try taking this route.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Herd-Life-Li ... l/24817058

Looks to me to be 5 gallons with free shipping to the store for $38.24 US

Just my thoughts,

Unfortunately that one contains propionic acid (preservative) which will likely make it unusable for fermentation. So I've read here anyways.

Expat take a look at my link above, apparently the preservative is okay.
