Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Spiral Condenser Connection

Post by Centimeter »

I am currently making a spiral leibig condenser (3/4”) and I was thinking about how to connect it to my still. I want it to be removable for storage purposes however I am having trouble thinking of a means to make it detachable while ensuring proper positioning of the spiral. At first I was thinking of using a brass compression fitting, but I am uncomfortable using it due to the lead content. I started looking into stainless compression fittings, but I quickly found that they are designed for ¾” OD pipes. The only thing I can think of that might work would be to make a vertical male female adaptor joint so as to ensure proper positioning of the spiral, however that doesn’t seem like a very concise solution to me.

How are you guys connecting your spirals? Is it really all that bad to use a properly treated brass fitting in the liquid phase of the still? Is there a SS compression fitting that would work for a 7/8” OD pipe?
