Re: weight of oak barrels?
actually just found some weights. for 255L barrel the weight is about 45 kilograms. I can get these for about $145, so that's $3.20 per kilo of oak. I think that's pretty decent?

Re: weight of oak barrels?
I paid $75 for half a 320 litre used red wine barrel made from French oak. So I think your price is in the ballpark. Hell of a lot cheaper than buying it in little packs from the brew store.
Be aware that wine barrels may have anti-fungal agents painted lightly on the outside, usually just on the ends of the barrel, I think. I am not even certain it is done in Australia, but when I cut the staves up I split off the outside 3 mm or so from the oak sticks before using them, just to be sure.
And half a 320 litre barrel was pretty heavy. Can be moved around, but takes some effort.

Be safe.

And have fun.

hookline, cheers - guess ill save up and grab a barrel
yeah, i planned to sand off the outside or chip/split the outside off, because i figured they might have paint or some sealant or crap on them. didn't guess anti-fungal, but all the same..
