Hi Everyone,
As we all know that using OEG we collect 400 ml out of 1 liter of alcohol @ %43 ABV, and we use clean hearts I am trying to work out what if I start with 35 percent of 1 liter or 30 percent of 1 liter do I still collect 400 ml or because I started with a low percent alcohol I cut early, when I read the forum
some people cut it when the ABV drops to %40 so can you please guys tell me how to approach this ?
Where to cut the gin run ?

I tell you how I do: Dilute ABV to 40 for safety reasons, I distill very much very slowly to keep things that I don't want in the boiler, just perceive smell of "botanical cooked" interrupt the collection of hearts. The 400ml so for me are a rough indication but not something absolute.

agree with demy with the 400mm as a rough guide.
my usual MO now, like my last 2L run, is to collect from 760mm to 900mm in roughly 20mm samples.
yes, it does mean i end up with about 7 jars, but i usually leave them overnight and blend in what i want the next morning.

Hi,
Thanks but do you also take into account the head temperature to finish a run like when the ABV drops to %40 percent.

If you are doing something that's new to you, numbers aren't much help. Select your cut to suit your tastes and keep detailed records for future reference. If your best results are always close to a certain temperature, or volume, that's the number you're looking for.

Re: Where to cut the gin run ?
neither really.
i can see the temp because i need the thermometer in the 90 degree glass lab to block the hole.

from memory, i think it gets to about 90C at the 400mm volume cutoff.
i can tell by my notes that i haven't taken any abv readings for months, i just go by smell and taste now.
i only test the abv after the blend is complete, so i can calculate dilution for bottling.
