Clay demijohn

Post by Virandell »

Hi anybody in UK seen maybe clay demijohn for aging ? It's basically allowing alcohol to breathe like a barrel it's supposed to be grate for brandys but also whisky if you want add oak staves.
There's only one supplier in Poland who's making them they came up on that idea on distilling forum.

Unfortunately after brexit the guy not shipping from Poland to UK
It's quite pricey it's around 20£ for 1 us gallon but it's seems worth it

That must be a special clay that doesn't let all the alcohol to just vape out.

Correct they been working on special kind of clay for couple of years, it's still evaporating alcohol as normal barrel, for example it evaporated 50-70ml in 6 months when guy been holding that clay demijohn in 23C

This isn't new to the forum. Searches for clay, amphora, terracotta, should produce results.

I don't think it is anything I'll be chasing soon. I'd be asking about the lead content of the vessels before I got my wallet out.

Its not a new idea, mostly its been used in wine making, I did read somewhere recently that some one is attempting to age a spirit the same way.
Cant remember where I read it or saw it. The main thing to be watchful of is there are no glazes used that contain lead or other nasties.
