Distilling schools

Post by PC1 »

So my wife has told me she is sending me to a 4 day distilling workshop in Colorado this year. I think this is amazing! The only catch is we will have to fly. I told her that I love the idea, but, there’s always a but, I wonder if we could find one in say Kentucky or Tennessee and take the bikes for a couple of days of riding. Maybe do the Dragon or similar,
Does anyone know of classes or workshops around that area?
As background I am only looking to get better as a hobby and not start any commercial business.
Thanks in advance!

Schools can be very expensive for just a hobby. Make sure that the time is spent on fermenting and distilling and not half of it on the business end if this is your goal. I know a few in the PNW but not familiar in your area.

Bushy makes a good point .From what a few have said that have attended them , they are primarily about getting you up to speed with rules and regulations , and how to actually distill is touched on .
You may be quite disappointed if you think you’d be spending 4 days fermenting and distilling .

Not sure what "do the Dragon" means, just wear a mask & wash your hands when you're through :D .

I don't think it gets more Distilling than Louisville, so check out Moonshine University - Louisville Kentucky

Just a thought but you are currently enrolled in the greatest distilling school there is. And it don’t cost a cent.

But, you could also explore the Whiskey Trail.

Downslope in denver area offers a course, but it is focused on starting up a distillery. When I took it, it was good and covered a lot of things I had never considered, Marketing, rules and regulations. It was light on the actual production part and for why I took it, that was fine. The distilling part is not the hard part of opening up.

 In my younger days with a 5 speed, The Blessing of God I'm still here!

I agree about the Whiskey Trail, probably even better than a "school" for experience.
I've visited maybe 10 distilleries, from Beam in Bardstown to small "craft distillers".
Some of them I'm pretty sure you could talk to and probably volunteer to help for a few days.
At Willie's Whiskey in Montana, tourists come on Wednesday to write in label info, put your initials on it & stick on the bottles:

One suggestion, as I write, is to head to Danville, Kentucky. Disclosure: I've never been.
But check out Wilderness Trail Distillery which is owned by the same people as Ferm Solutions.
They apparently are the go-to yeast for Bourbon distillers and do offer classes:
