Strange stuff in my Lyne Arm.

Post by pangea »

After running a batch of sour mash I disassembled my "rig" and upon inspection found a thin slivery sheen coating the inside of the Lyne Arm. It wiped out easily. Before running this batch, I ran some water to make sure the system was clean but I didn't look in the arm after the water.

What could this stuff be? I filtered the final product through a coffee filter and then through activated charcoal. It looks ok to me.

Any input will be appreciated.

you filtered your final output with a coffe filter? This would mean that you had some solids in you final product? If this is so then some of the wash must have come into your lyne arm which would also explain the silvery thin sheen.

I recently also distilled a batch of sour mash and my final product is cristal clear!

How big is your veseel and how much wash did you put into it?

The still is a 15.5 gallon beer keg. I had about 9 gallons of wash in it. It got away from me for a few seconds and the temp went to 210 but I backed it off immediately. Could this have caused the silvery substance? What is that stuff?

There were some solids in the final product that looked like copper scale from the inside of the arm. They filtered out with the coffee filter and the charcoal made the final product "water clear" .

I doubt that the temperature has caused your problem.
I have that greasy stuff in my condenser after every run, but more with grain or fruit washes thoug. I guess it's fuseloils, because its stinks the same as fusels. This thought is backened by the observation that when i take a run too far into the tails an oil-like film is floating on the product.

My cure is that i rinse my condenser with water after a run.
