Max ABV of low wines

Post by AlkyQ »

have a couple fifths of super cheap booze.
I want to combine them and redistil them to remove the heads and tails and collect just the hearts. In the interest of safety What is the maximum ABV you can safely distill?
I am new and am experimenting with an electric Airpot.
Thanks

For safety considerations 40%abv is the highest recommended boiler charge. 25-30%abv seems to be common for pot stilled whiskies.

You could make a small mash/ferment to proof it down and add some flavor too.

Cheers!

What Jonny said

Not sure what sort of cheap spirits you have , but you are unlikely to remove much heads or tails with a Pot still .

If you’re talking about beer or wine , sure you’ll be able to , and to a lesser degree if its some Whisky ( but then you’ll loose all the Oak aging flavours as well ) .
But if its a cheap Vodka , you’re unlikely to pick any difference as it was invariably made in a reflux still with cuts more defined than you pot still could remove .

However , enjoy the process as each time you run your still , you get better and better at it .
