My second double thumper run

Post by rubberduck71 »

So I bought a 2nd thumper to pair up with my buddy's 15 gal rig + thumper. Results from my 1st run on LME wash here: viewtopic.php?t=90129

This run was an agave syrup (Costco) + inverted white sugar wash. Started 1.080 & stalled @ 1.020. pH was a little low, so I added some calcium carb & nutrients & additional yeast. 2 weeks later, hadn't moved much, so I figured there may be some unfermentables from the agave syrup. 0.060 movement ~ 8% ABV, so good enough.

Based on feedback from Haggy, charged thumpers with feints + H20:

Close to what you did in the first run. The increasing ABV from pot through the thumpers also helps to keep the thumpers from filling up too much.

I look forward to seeing your future run posts.

My buddy was in middle of running some of his stuff, so with my modular additions, hooked up the double thumper to my 8 gal Digiboil. Charged with 7 gal of wash & away we go... 1500w @ 100% on my SCR.

I was a tad gun-shy from the previous LME batch about puking into boilers & overfilling them, so when I could feel the too-hot-to-the-touch vapor arm from boiler going over to 1st thumper about 1.5 hrs later, backed off power to 90v (117 is max) on just the 1000w element. Took another 50 min to start warming up vapor arm to 2nd thumper. And then I waited & waited... Impatience got the better of me after an hour, so cranked 1500w @ 90v. By this point the boiler was up to 203F, which is higher than it'd be on just a standard pot spirit run. So it took 4.25 hrs from power on to get drippage at pencil lead thickness.

Took 500 mL fores. Then the following:
#1 500 mL 30 min 87%
#2 500 mL 30 min 85%
#3 500 mL 30 min 85%
#4 500 mL 30 min 80% (significant drop & boiler was reading 212F; figured we gotta be getting near the end of run)
#5 500 mL 45 min 60% (took longer because the boiler tripped off at the 213 temp setting I had it programmed for, so had a pause & restart)

1 & 2 next day were definitely heads. 3-5 I deemed keepers (1.5L total; forgot to measure ABV when I put it in the jar to add future runs to -- I have ~13 more gallons to process).

For shits & giggles, I tested the boiler & thumper ABV's during cleanup the next day:
Boiler - starting gravity of wash 1.020, measured 1.040 as backset??? <--- this is a mystery to me!!!
Thumper 1 - 0% ABV, stayed ~1.2L
Thumper 2 - 10% ABV, stayed ~1.2L

Here's a question for ya: should I throw the thumper "backset" into the next boiler charge? Could this be considered sweetwater(-ish)?

Appreciate any & all feedback! This double thumper stuff doesn't have a lot of info on the HD or any other site.
