Anyone want to share shipping of a pallet of barrels??

Post by DropBear1986 »

Greetings,

Long time lurker, infrequent poster here. Quick background, I own/operate a meadery in the UK and have been brewing all sorts of things for a few decades, but only been dabbling in distilling for a few years, with some success and some failure (probably a 50:50 mix).

I'm at a point now, where I would like to fill up some 20-30L barrels, starting with a bourbon. Unfortunately American white oak is as rare as rocking horse sh!t here, and most places where barrels are sold aren't able to answer basic questions about the species or where they were produced.

So, I guess the first question I have is whether anyone knows of a source of good quality virgin oak barrels in the UK?

Assuming there aren't any, my next question is whether there are any UK members here that would be interested in splitting the shipping to purchase some barrels from
this company. I don't know anything of the quality, but they have been in business for good few years and they have been mentioned once or twice here.

They use Quercus Patraea from Eastern Europe and can toast and char to specification. I would prefer the American Quercus Alba, but I guess beggers can't be choosers.

I'm looking to do this urgently, but some time in the next few months. I have a lot of fermenting and stripping to do in the mean time.

Hi -

I have recently had some 100L barrels custom made from american oak in Portugal (where I am based) and for larger sizes, the price is competitive with the Serbian barrels. For smaller barrels, the prices in those lists seem much better, so maybe go with those?

Send me a PM if you want to know more. I am curious about your Meadery, I am from the UK originally :)

Sounds familiar

http://www.coppercustomstillcomponents. ... tre+barrel

A story of a pallet of barrels originally going to cost about $100 aud each .

After handling , shipping , customs , more handling blah blah blah ……. Ended up very close to $400 a barrel .

Bad taste in many mouths and forum nice vibe shattered ……damn shame .

The barrel …. Well I love mine to bits .

Thanks Tommy - PM sent.

I have had bad experiences with many things coming in from other countries and it has been unpleasant every single time. Maybe I just have to bite the bullet and get something from in the UK.

Any advice or recommendations for Barrels would be greatly appreciated

These are made in Bulgaria: https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product ... cba1185463

I'd prefer cheaper, and for it to be Quercus alba, but Quercus petraea might have to do. Anyone here made bourbon on Quercus petraea? I'm thinking medium toast will probably work best for my preferred style.

220€ for 16l American oak to the door.
Took two months as they are busy.

Not great communication but a lovely barrel.

The smaller barrel in the picture is from wineoakbarrels that you requested about.
Class barrel, have it 4+ years never leaked a drop.

Cheaper but deffo good quality.
Have to pay by bank transfer, spigot came with silicon seal so I just be replaced it with ss

Thanks for the info and pictures. how much above the sticker price was the amount you paid delivered? It will give me an idea of how much shipping and duty is. Were these bought into the UK?

The Spanish crowd was about 80€ delivery, bigger barrel cost more obviously.

The Hungarian crowd the shipping was about same as the barrel.

Both shipped to Ireland, you'd probably have to pay a brexit tax though

Stupid Brexit. I'm actually an expat and moved over in 2016, and was thinking "this will all blow over soon". It didn't...
