Upgrading my Solar Panel

Post by Bushman »

The solar panel on my boat is 10 years old, my next project is to change it out for a larger and more efficient panel. I am also adding a solar charger controller. My boat has 6 batteries, 4 dedicated to the house. I want to be anchored out for several days without relying on shore power. So far I am into it for just under $1000.

Bushman I'm not sure what is available where you live, but take a look at flexible solar panels if you already haven't. Far more suitable for a boat.

I looked at them, the one I purchased will be on top of the cabin. It is 89”x49.8”. It’s larger than my current solar panel but will fit in the same location.

I put a roof on my tinnie with flexi solar panels, can run an electric motor all day long and batteries dont drop below 13.2v

CIGS panels harold, good choice. No fear of cracking or impact damage etc.
They are not quite as efficient as rigid silicone, but the benefits totally eclipse that for boating.
(They also continue to work partially obscured, which most other panel types don't)
