Cooling a liebig.

Post by Lowlyric »

Ran sugar back 3 grain last night. 9% abv 12 gal in a pot still with hi shots in thumper. After 10 pints was still @ 145 proof started at 170. Ran slow and at 195 degrees lost the ability to cool it. Made several runs on this setup but not with hi shots in the thumper and haven't had this problem before. I'm assuming I lost a lot of flavor not getting the lower proof. I have a shot gun condenser in the works. Any advice would be helpful. Not sure why the proof stayed so high so long.

First run I did I had the same problem. Using to much water to cool my cooling tank and ice, started getting expensive. I set up a multistage cooling system which can handle a long run. First I dug a 12 foot hole in the ground, dropped 50 feet of 1/2 inch copper in the hole with s spiral coil, going down and a straight pipe coming back up. Added a second pump to the cooling tank and so the system now uses the earth as a heat sink. It will circulate cool water back in the main cooling tank reservoir. Works great.

That's great! I thought about a ground loop too - ended up doing this instead. Works great up to 3k - 3.5k watts.

Whoa, I love this forum.

I'm not sure I'm going to need it yet with what I have planned, but I might build one of these for the fun of it!
