VM head, centering reflux question

Post by AlZilla »

I'm reading about VM heads and wondering about centering reflux on the way back down.

2" copper column. The head would be 2, 2"x 1" reducers, connected vertically by 1" pipe and a TEE. Off the TEE horizontally would be a 1" stainless gate valve to the product condenser. On top would be (vertically) a regular double coil reflux condenser in 2" pipe.

A picture would be worth a thousand words, wouldn't it? Hopefully, you can envision what I'm talking about.

The question - would it be worthwhile, or maybe detrimental, to grind out the stop in the lower 2"x 1" reducer, then extend the lower 1" vertical pipe just through the neck of the lower 2"x 1" reducer, (maybe 1/4") to force the returning condensed liquid to drop into the center of the column?

As opposed to letting it run down the inside of the 2x1 reducer and then down the walls of the column.

Appreciate any thoughts. I just haven't seen that particular thing done in any of my reading.
