So I did a thing -my first attempt at brewing had me going left and south instead of straight ahead.
I brought 375 grams of cornflakes to the boil then kept them between 150 - 160 ° F for an hour and a half.
I then added potato flakes , 3 cups approximately , bringing the slurry to a boil , then simmering for half an hour.
Once the temperature hit 140 I added Alpha amalayse, adding another 5 cups of potato flakes , adding 2 kgs of dextrose , half a kg of white sugar when temps had dropped more
I waited until this cooked and brought back to 80 degrees and added the yeast.
I then placed the wash in a fermenter.
I'll keep this updated.

i hope it works out, but i don't understand why newbies don't just follow a Tried and and true recipe.Fincheeei1 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2024 7:34 pm So I did a thing -my first attempt at brewing had me going left and south instead of straight ahead.

your effort seems strange in a few ways, but i am still under heavy medication
cornflakes - no need to boil for 1.5 hours, they are already gelanatized and can be boiled/simmered for 20-30 mins and are mainly for flavour.
why wait to add white sugar when temps had dropped?
i presume the alpha amalyse is to convert the free starch in the potato flakes (if there is any), this would give you some fermentable sugars, but mainly unfermentable dextrins.
alpha needs to work with some form of beta amalyse/gluco from grain or liquid to convert the dextrins into fermentable sugars.
what yeast did you use?
what were your OG and PH measurements?
how many litres of wash?

Re: Newbie hybrid recipe - How'd I do ?
Next time I will follow a tried and tested recipe.
This time I've just experimented with the cornflakes whiskey recipe and added my own spin.
Ive seen the use of potato flakes with favourable results with the method Ive used,
There's 23 liters of wash and I'll do tests when fermentation finishes..
I used a local brewers yeast from my local market.
Bit of overkill cooking !
I hope it works well , it tastes nice , sweet on the fingers..

Re: Newbie hybrid recipe - How'd I do ?
cornflakes and potato flakes are both pre-cooked.
Are you planning on making a neutral from this?
When you say 'brewers yeast', do you literally mean brewers yeast from a grocery store? That is generally a nutritional supplement and not active yeast. If you mean a brewing yeast from a homebrew store, you are good.
I'd echo the advice of trying recipes from the tried and true section until at least you have your process dialed in and you have a broader understanding. In the meantime, follow all the links below in the "required reading" section, and read them thoroughly. You'll have some good questions at that point.

Both ….IIRC … require DAP ( Di -Ammonium Phosphate ) which you will usually find at a home brew shop . Some times they sell it as DAP … other times , they sell it hidden as a main ingredient as “wine nutrient “ …. And of cause , they sell it fir a motza
My recommended goto .
