Wind Damage to Bloody Butcher

Post by Bee »

Are there any varieties of red corn that are more wind-resistant than Bloody Butcher?
Every year the BB gets it's tassels then gets blown over in the wind.

My small Jimmy Red plot last year was hit by the wind. I drove in some T posts (metal fence posts) along each side of the plot, then wove heavy nylon twine back and forth between them to hold the plants up (bending the plants back up while doing this. Most of the plants survived.

This years (much bigger) plot got hit with a bit of wind a few weeks ago, and maybe 2 dozen plants were bent over. I just bent them back up and they regrouped just fine.

Now the racoons have found it ... maybe a dozen plants chewed/broken off. I'm lowering the bottom 2 strands of electric fence to 6" & 12" to try to keep them out.

I watched a video from HOSS gardening that said growing Jimmy Red like sweet corn (irrigation, fertilization) makes the plant weak and susceptible to wind damage. I don't water, but I did lightly fertilize a couple of times until tasseling.

These are bent about 3/4 of the way up. The tassels are almost broke off.

That's interesting.

A friend grows Sunn Hemp (Crotalaria juncea) around his corn patch to act as a wind break.

“Hemp” should also distract the authorities from your moonshine operations..

Best plant it on the neighbor’s land though.

Your thinking of the wrong hemp.
Sunn hemp is a really tall legume that's covered with yellow flowers and makes small inedible beans. It looks nothing like cannabis. Sunn hemp's claim to fame is for cordage, that's why it's called hemp, it can also grow on poor soil and make it better by fixing nitrogen from the air and adding humus to the soil. With these quality's, it makes an excellent rotational crop with corn and a natural wind brake.

Wish I had room for something like that.

Lodged corn will straighten itself. I wouldn't worry about it.
If it's got hide or hair, I can ride it.
Wheels or tracks, I can drive it.
Rotor or fixed wings, I can fly it.
And if it's grain or fruit, i can make a drop outta it!

I’ve grown New York red corn sourced from Great Lakes staple seeds. It’s 75-80day variety and only gets 6-7’ tall for me and doesn’t lodge as easily as taller options. Lodging during dry down is an issue, but that seems pretty universal for non hybrids.

If it's green snapped just till it under and replant if you have enough growing days left in the season. That, or file on your crop insurance.
