Hello from Alaska

Post by AK Mooseshine »

Hi all.
I’ve been lurking here for about 9 months absorbing tons of great info. Much respect to everyone for their posts sharing knowledge.
I live in South Central AK.
I have an 8 gal simple pot still, I usually use a small thumper, and of course a worm. It’s simple and small but I can set it up in the kitchen in my cabin. Great way to pass time in the winter.
After doing a vinegar cleaning run, I made a couple of Birdwatchers sugar wash. Ran one to further clean the still ( I used this run to figure out running the still and how to adjust the stove top). Then ran one to keep. Pretty easy. Next run I did Flaked corn and malted barley run. Easy peezy. After that, I new what to expect with corn mashes and the thickening that happens. Then I switched to cracked corn (with extra milling) and malted barley. Ran a few of those, great results. Moved on to SCD’s CROW and Honey Bear recipes. Lately I’ve been following up my all grain runs with a sour mash like Uncle Jesse style. That seems to be the best of both worlds, and is pretty economical. I use 5 gallon paint filter bags to mamage my grain. Works great. Hang em to drain, so I only do a little squeezing.
Upon discovering the “Nuclear Aging Method, I have been rapid aging all my All grain and Sour mash. The results are awesome.
I’m planning to build a bigger condenser/ worm. I bought a spring bender and flaring tool so I’m armed for this project, I just have to pick up my materials. Next project would be a bigger thumper. I hope some day to build a copper pot still from scratch, but I have more to learn before that happens.
Thanks to all for great contributions to this sight.
Cheers
