Have you tried deleting some of your already read messages?
If there are to many it can stop you being able to open a new message you have received.

Private messages not sending
The recipient says he got a message from me but when he clicks it says its on hold.
I see it in my outbox but when i click it shows as sent with a timestamp.
So my messages arent always getting sent?
I tried to search this up but get the message
“JavaScript must be enabled and Google whitelisted in order to view the Custom Google Search Results”
This is moments after i successfully did another search.
Are these glitches or am i having another senior moment.

Thanks Yummyrum. Yes, to Pal, but my outbox has another message in it which shows as sent. Not sure if adamf got it.
A true ‘sent’ should no longer be in the outbox, yes?

Re: Not authorized to read private message on hold
I am getting the message that Alzahra888 sent me today. Maybe Copperhead was onto it - maybe it was because my mailbox was full yesterday. I deleted a lot of messages and now I can receive again. But the ones that were sent to me yesterday are gone.

Dang
Maybe you two should rethink how many PMs you send
Maybe I’m an unsociable O’l arse but I’ve been here since 2013 and my PM box is only 26% full .

Re: Not authorized to read private message on hold
Lol, mine not full either Yummy , never been emptied.
I don't know why you think you cant have more than 20 PMs Copper, Ive got 20 pages of them and box still isn't full.
799 of them to be precise and box is only 15% full.
Should be a while yet before I need to empty it.

Maybe a bigger inbox is a moderator perk? Mine says 16% full (16 out of 100 messages stored)

Yes Shiner you are correct about the inbox only having the capacity for 100 messages. It must be a limited storage thing.

Re: Not authorized to read private message on hold
Apologies and yes it would seem this is the case . (I had no idea)
I was wondering how Copperhead had clocked up 5000 PMs in a couple of years
Mods do indeed get 5000 PMs whereas members get 100 .
This seems a little odd .I thought it was way higher than that . Maybe Uncle can amend that .
Anyway , yes there is an option in your PM settings to auto delete older PMs .
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Not authorized to read private message on hold
I figured it was a storage space reason. Understandable that mods/admin would have a lot, to not have to worry about message space when discussing forum issues, or needing to hold on to important information. But having to store that many possible messages from every user could rack up the storage requirements for the server pretty quick. Also, if everyone took everything to PMs, what's the point in a forum? 100 seems like a good number, enough to have a couple in depth convos without worrying about having to delete fast, but small enough that it hopefully doesn't impact the server size too much.

I’ve never understood why folk discuss distilling matters in PMs …. What is the point of a forum ?

Re: Not authorized to read private message on hold
We have plenty of storage space, that's not even close to an issue. I believe I limit the number of PMs people can have because honestly, after a few decades are are thousands of PMs in mailboxes of users who will never log in again. There's also no PHPBB extension or method for pruning old PMs.
As far as permissions, I got dizzy trying to limit access to certain pages which are resource intensive, and my security measures no long limit users who are logged in properly. In other words, once you log in and get the PHPBB cookie in your browser defining you as registered and logged in, you aren't limited. So, nothing on my end as far as recent security measures would limit your ability to PM.

Re: Not authorized to read private message on hold
As above.
As far as I know we have always discouraged distilling talk from being sent back and forth as a PM.
PMs in my opinion are for subjects of a more personal nature.

Re: Not authorized to read private message on hold
Yes, what could be the reasons for PMs in a distilling forum like HD?
It could be personal stuff. Personally, I have made a lot of friends in this forum. A lot of us are, after all, in the same age bracket, common or similar situation in life, and we share a hobby that is a gigantic rabbit hole. Maybe the law abiding members are careful about stealing someone's thread for off topic talk and just decide to chat "offline"?
Or, if you are conspiratorial, it could be members talking about the "forbidden" subjects, using the "forbidden" words that will lead you to get angry PMs from someone and ultimately a forum ban by the mods? A hidden "offline" cesspool of forbidden stuff that just can't be mentioned in a thread...
I like to think it's the former, but that's just me. I don't have the habit of deleting old messages as disk space was a problem in the 80'ies and 90'ies, and not something I even think about when using online services these days. 100 PMs in one year is not that much, most of them replies to a previous PM. I don't mind deleting 50 of them in one go, I just never thought I would have to.

Sometimes its easier to have a discussion about a simple process or protocol of an elementary subject matter, without the static, a quick question that an answer could be found if you had an hour or 2 to dig.

Did not receive any message from you, CC. I guess you need to copy the text into a new message and send again. Or maybe that's what you did? Anyway, I have no message from you, but I do receive now so it's working for me.
