No Rule Distiller from Norway – I tend to ask “why?”

Post by No Rule Distiller »

Hi everyone,

I’m Rune, from Norway, and I’ve been playing around with fermentation, distilling and flavour for quite a few years.

My background is engineering, which probably explains why I have a bad habit of asking “why?” whenever someone tells me “this is how it’s done.”

I’m not a professional distiller. I’m an enthusiastic amateur who likes experimenting, making mistakes, changing one variable at a time, tasting the result — and occasionally discovering that the traditional way was absolutely right after all. 😄

My interests are mostly spirits rather than beer: whisky, rum, gin, vodka and my increasingly ridiculous attempts at understanding mezcal. I use everything from simple pot stills to reflux equipment, and I’m probably more interested in flavour development and process than simply producing alcohol.

My philosophy is basically:

Learn the rules. Understand why they exist. Then you know which ones you can break.

That eventually became the name No Rule Distiller.

I’ve also recently written a book about my experiments, failures and what I’ve learned along the way, but I’m not here just to throw advertising around. I joined because forums like this contain something books and YouTube often don’t: years of accumulated experience, arguments, strange experiments and people willing to say “I tried that — it didn’t work.”

So I’ll probably ask questions, challenge a few assumptions, share some experiments, and occasionally be completely wrong.

Looking forward to joining the discussions.

Cheers from Norway,
Rune / No Rule Distiller

Here are our forum rules , I'd suggest not breaking any of them, the consequences are often not good.

Having said that you immediately posted where the book could be found and purchased.
That part has been edited from your post.

Welcome.
Interestingly, you may find that someone may respond with "this is how its done", because so frequently successful outcomes are done the way they are done. Whats a good analogy?

Ah, for example: Running ones CW lines opposite of counter flow is less than optimal but will indeed condense vapor. Every experienced distiller knows this or should know that counter flow is optimal,,,,,because that is how it is done. Savvy?

What is generally not tolerated is the "because I said so".

The 400lb Gorilla that often monitors these forums would very likely recommend that you "only talk about what you know" when making assertions.

Velkommen, Rune, trivelig med en landsmann på laget! I live with "söta bror" in Stockholm and we are few nordiques on the forum. One more is great!

So you expressed your interest and your personality. What still do you have and where do you want to start? Or continue? All ears.

Hi
I have different kind of stuff. An airstill (useful for small batch gin etc), a T500 kopperdome and a lot of different modular stuff for reflux.
Effect controllers is useful.
And I just bought a Digiboil 65 l with extension. Useful for bigger mashes and.... 3500 watts for strippping runs.

Welcome, SBB points out some good points.

Changing one variable at a time is the way I also approach most experiments.

Yes, that is for sure the way I do it too.

But, as a hobby distiller, it is damn difficult to do scientific testing....
