Bourbon, rye whisky and corn whiskey can be designated as "straight" whiskies. In order to obtain this designation, the spirits need to be distilled at less than 180 degrees proof, then aged for not less than two years in new, charred oak barrels in the case of bourbon and rye; new, uncharred oak barrels being used for Tennessee-style corn whiskey.
