Overview

This calculator models steady-state operation of a packed reflux column and is most applicable to equilibrium-based reflux runs.

This calculator is intended for 2", 3", and 4" diameter packed reflux columns installed over a pot still.

Operating results are given for an equivalent theoretical plate column design. The distillate product ABV % is estimated using a table of values. The user provides an estimate of the expected distillate ABV % in the input data.

Quick Start

  1. Enter column dimensions and packing characteristics
  2. Enter boiler charge and wash ABV
  3. Set desired distillate rate or expected ABV
  4. Run the calculator and review reflux ratio and predicted run behavior

How to Use the Calculator

Enter the input data for the column, including a desired or observed product distillate rate.

The calculator will:

  • Determine the reflux ratio for the specified operation
  • Estimate output characteristics for the run

It can also be used in reverse:

  • Adjust the distillate rate to achieve a desired reflux ratio or run time

What the Calculator Provides

The calculator estimates several operating characteristics for a packed reflux column using the specified input data.

Note: In the time step table, "Strong" refers to the alcohol content (% ABV) of the liquid remaining in the boiler.

Distillation time calculations begin after the column reaches equilibrium (plate loading).

The following are estimated:

  • Reflux ratio
  • Distillate ABV
  • Run time to tails
  • Amount and ABV of heads and hearts
  • Flooding conditions
  • Packing efficiency
  • Condenser performance

Important Assumptions

The results assume:

  • Constant power input throughout the run
  • No increase in reflux ratio during the run

In practice:

  • Increasing power or reflux to maintain a steady takeoff rate will change the results
  • Time to tails will differ under dynamic operation

Run Time and Product Estimates

The run time to reach tails is estimated.

Calculations are then made for:

  • Foreshots/heads produced
  • Hearts produced
  • ABV of each fraction up to the start of tails

This calculator is not intended for fast stripping runs.

Data Sources and Model Basis

The results are based on:

  • Real run data
  • Several HomeDistiller (HD) forum posts
  • Simulations of packed reflux columns
  • Established distillation column design equations

Estimates are provided for:

  • Flooding conditions (Yes / No)
  • Column efficiency

The calculator is intended as a tool for studying and understanding column operation.

Vapor and Heat Transfer Model

The vapor rate to the condenser is calculated from:

  • Pot power (watts)
  • Estimated vapor ABV at the top plate or packing

The vapor ABV estimate is entered by the user and may be adjusted if needed.

A default heat loss (typically ~30%) is included in the calculation.

Condenser Modeling

CM Columns (Cooling Management)

For a CM column:

  • The user enters an estimate of cooling water flow rate
  • The calculator can search for a value where:
 Condenser Heat Transfer = Heat Transfer Required

This ensures sufficient condensation of reflux.

VM / CCVM Columns

For VM or CCVM columns:

  • The user enters an estimate of cooling water flow rate
  • The calculator can search for a value where:

Condenser Heat Transfer = 1.2 × Heat Transfer Required (This ensures full condensation and subcooling of reflux vapor.)

This ensures:

  • Complete condensation of reflux
  • Subcooling of condensate
  • No vapor escape through the condenser

Alternatively, the user may use the entered cooling water flow directly.

Heat Loss Guidance

An estimate of still heat loss is required.

Typical values:

  • Well insulated system: ~20%
  • Average insulation: ~30%
  • Poor or no insulation: ~36–40%

Condenser Design Inputs

The user specifies the design details of the reflux condenser.

Supported types:

Usage:

  • Shotgun: suitable for CM or VM columns
  • Dimroth: suitable for CM, VM, or CCVM columns

Example sizing guidance:

  • 2" column, CM shotgun: ~0.45 ft² surface area
  • 2" column, CCVM coil:
 * ≥80 inches of 3/8" tubing, or  
 * ≥0.65 ft² surface area

Notes and Limitations

  • The model assumes steady-state operation
  • Results are estimates, not exact predictions
  • Operator adjustments during the run will change outcomes
  • Best used for understanding trends and planning runs
