This FAQ has been compiled and is maintained by members of the Homedistiller Forums. It is intended to help new distillers understand the basics and avoid common mistakes.
Is this safe / am I going to get blown up / am I going to go blind?
Distilling is not inherently dangerous, but it is not risk-free.
Most risks come from a few key failure modes:
- pressure (sealed or blocked stills)
- vapor leaks (fire hazard)
- unsafe materials (contamination)
- operator error
These risks are easy to avoid if you understand what you are doing.
Safety fundamentals:
- Never leave a running still unattended.
- All stills must be open to atmosphere. Never allow pressure to build.
- Ensure your condenser is knocking down all vapor. Vapor leaks are dangerous.
- Alcohol vapor is flammable—keep ignition sources away.
- Label all collected product clearly.
If something seems wrong: shut it down immediately
Going blind / methanol concerns
A common myth is that home distilling causes blindness due to methanol.
This is not true when normal fermentation and distillation practices are followed.
Methanol:
- is produced during fermentation (especially from fruit)
- is present in small amounts
- remains present throughout the entire distillation
Important: Methanol does not all come out first.
Discarding foreshots helps remove some highly volatile compounds and improves quality, but it does not remove all methanol, nor is that its purpose.
Methanol poisoning cases are typically caused by:
- contaminated or adulterated alcohol (criminal activity)
- industrial/denatured alcohol being consumed
When using proper ingredients, safe materials, and correct practices, the final product is as safe as any ethanol-based beverage.
What is distillation?
Distillation is the process of heating a liquid mixture to create vapor and condensing that vapor back into liquid.
Because ethanol vaporizes more readily than water, the vapor contains a higher concentration of ethanol than the original liquid.
Distillation is the process of controlling and collecting this separation.

How does one create ethanol?
Ethanol is produced by yeast consuming sugars in an oxygen-limited environment.
This process is called fermentation.
Yeast will continue fermenting until:
- sugars are depleted, or
- alcohol reaches a level toxic to the yeast
Different yeast strains tolerate different alcohol levels.
What is needed for fermentation to work?
Yeast is a living organism and requires:
- oxygen (at the start, for reproduction)
- nutrients
- appropriate temperature
- proper sugar concentration
After initial growth, fermentation should occur in a low-oxygen environment.

I found this great Turbo yeast
Turbos contain yeast plus large amounts of nutrients and buffers.
They are easy to use but often produce more off-flavors.
Running a wash at moderate strength (12–14% ABV) with a proven recipe typically produces better results than pushing very high ABV.
Which type of still (Pot/Reflux) is better?
Depends on what you want to make:
- Pot still
Used for flavored spirits (whiskey, rum, brandy)
- Reflux still
Used for high purity / neutral spirits (vodka, fuel ethanol)
Many distillers use both, or interchange heads on the same boiler.
What should I build my still out of?
Safe materials:
- Copper
- Stainless steel
Avoid:
- Lead solder
- Unknown metals
- unsafe plastics in the vapor path
Use only food-safe construction methods.
What about plastics?
Hot ethanol—especially vapor—is a strong solvent.
It can:
- dissolve plastics
- extract chemicals
- contaminate product
General rule:
Do not use plastics in the vapor path
Fermentation (low ABV) in HDPE containers is acceptable.
How do I run my still?

Fresh distillate is clear.
Color and smoothness come from aging:
- barrels
- oak chips
- time
What can I use to power my still?
Common heat sources:
- Electric elements
- Hot plates
- Propane burners
Control of heat input is critical.

What is a hydrometer / alcoholometer?
- Hydrometer*:
Measures sugar content and fermentation progress
- Alcoholometer*:
Measures ABV of distilled spirits only (ethanol + water)
Cannot be used on sugar-containing liquid.
