Re: Marijuana Laws vs. Moonshine Laws
I know that in my area distilling "licker" is a felony. Thats big trouble in my book. Is that more trouble than pot? Yes and no. It all depends on how much weed you are found with. Both should be legal as far as I care.

Re: Jimbo's Absinthe
I hope everyone keeps the info. flowing. My wife has enjoyed absinthe in her travels and would like me to make some. I am educated on the art of distilling many types of grain alcohol. Thats what I like. There is no real absinthe available stateside ( so I have been told ). I have never tasted absin...

Re: Filtering the mash prior to distillation.
I just do a basic rack with mine. But its usually directly from the carbouy into the pot. I leave the solids behind. Most of the time my wash is sort of cloudy. I dont worry too much about it because I use a pot that has a tri-ply bottom. If your wash is going to stick and burn, its usually because...

Re: A question for those who carbon filter.
Angels gotta get by on something. You know from the first batch of hooch I made, I have not had a bad one. Some better than others but its all been better than most I have tried from other stills. I do say most because I have tried some corn hooch that was indescribably great. I may never be able to...

Re: Filtering the mash prior to distillation.
I dip mine from the main fermenter to another container. I pour it thru a 600 micron filter on the way to get out the big stuff. Let it go undisturbed in the secondary container for 24 hrs.. It will settle and be nice and clean all but the bottom 2 inches.

Re: A question for those who carbon filter.
Carbon won't change the composition of what you have for foreshots, heads, hearts, and tails... The best advice we can give is to learn to make clean washes that will produce clean spirits... Higher or lower alcohols will not be chemically altered by carbon filtering, they will just be clean higher...

Re: High temps. confusing, am I missing something?
I am running a column condensing tower but i am not packing it and only running water to the condenser. Basically a pot still. At 206 f the tails came on heavy on that run. I have noticed my temps ran high compared to a lot of info i have been reading. The hooch seems fine, got flavor, a bit of bite...

High temps. confusing, am I missing something?
Just running off my first all grain mash. The ferment was slower than what I am accustomed to but decided to run it off for the sake of not wanting to give it a chance to contaminate. The abv of the mash was low no doubt, the smell gave that away. Whats confusing is my temps.. I got the first drop o...

You know what CC, i saw a lecture on youtube given by a law professor. he said "under no circumstances should you talk to the police" no matter how innocent you are. he said " you know, when they read you your rights? it says: what ever you say can and will be used AGAINST you in the...

I know, i didnt figure it would be that easy......just sounded more innocent. MuleKicker, You know if you answering questions,........ and they asking (thats them, that ain't us), it's most likely going to be a bad day. Sounding innocent would be highly recommended in my opinion. However fruitless ...

Yes, I see little left that could keep this thing from looking like a pissing contest. Every reform, however necessary, will by weak minds be carried to an excess, that itself will need reforming.

WHAT SINGLES OUT DISTILLED SPIRITS?
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT IS INTRIGUING. PRODUCING A FORM OF A LEGALIZED PRODUCT, FROM LEGAL PRODUCTS, FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION. WHY IS IT THE ONLY LEGAL PRODUCT, REGULATED OR UNREGULATED, THAT IS PURCHASED AND CONSUMED BY HUMANS, THAT CAN BE CREATED FROM UNREGULATED OVER THE COUNTER ...

Re: A question for those who carbon filter.
Just bringing a little closure to this one. I have to believe you guys were on the right track when you suggested the carbon may have been holding water from the "flushing" of the filter prior to running the hooch thru and releasing some water into the hooch causing the drop in alc. conten...

Found site offering great filters/drum heaters/pumps.
This link may already be posted on this site some where. But I ran across it the other day and found some of the filters to be just the thing I have been looking for. It is worth a look if your needing filters that fit in the top of 5 gallon buckets, 55 gallon drums,or heaters that wrap around ferme...

Re: A question for those who carbon filter.
F.W. you may be on to something. As I mentioned earlier I ran just over a liter thru at 60% that came out 35%. Well I just ran another liter of the same batch of 60% and it came out 45%. So the proof may be increasing as the water is washed out. I don't have any water collecting in the bottom of the...

Re: A question for those who carbon filter.
Kiwistiller, I washed the charcoal with water, the 20 oz. or so that I crushed into fine pieces had to be wrapped in a cheese cloth type material to wash free of dust without loosing what was needed. The larger pellets were just rinsed in water several times and loaded into the filter on top of the ...

A question for those who carbon filter.
I have not been carbon filtering but started experimenting with it. I have ran two test samples thru my gravity filter and in both cases the hooch tested half the alcohol content when it came out as it was going in. In one case 60% dropped to 35%, the other 85% dropped to 43%. Thats 85%, tested w/ a...

[quote]next,, you did not say what your still was, if it is a pot still, that temperature "78.3c" wont hold up that is for a reflux still./quote] IT'S A REFLUX COLUM W/ ONLY THE CONDENSER HOOKED TO WATER FLOW, OPERATING AS A POT STILL. This explains much of my confusion. I did not realize ...

TEMP./OUTPUT/CARBON FILTER EFFECTS PROOF?????
Hello, First post here. I have a few questions I hope you can help with. I have made several some-what successful runs with my still. I am using a 13 gal ss boiler under a reflux tower set up as a pot still. I have the tower lightly packed with copper mesh, I heat with a gas burner. I am after "...
