Re: Are you getting heavy, Honey?
Why are you trying to compare honey to water? Not honey to water, but honey weight to water weight. They are different as people have pointed out clearly. The volume of 12 pounds of honey is much different than the volume of 12 pounds of water. I got this now I think. Thanks guys for all your cando...

Re: Are you getting heavy, Honey?
+1 SCD, although I have seen recipes with water scaled to match the addition of "1 gallon of honey" etc. So, since one gallon of honey equals 12 pounds, you would have to weigh out 12 pounds of water, in a vessel that would contain 12 pounds of weighed water, no matter how many fluid ounc...

Are you getting heavy, Honey?
While not a question to ask a significant other, I am curious about the recipe's I've found containing honey and would appreciate a bit of clarification. Recipe's I've seen call for poundage of honey. Now, what I know from local beekeepers is that honey is measured differently than standard ounces o...

Re: I learned a good lesson today
This is good insight for me as well. I'm brand new with a handful of strips and one spirit run under my belt. I'm trying to figure out how to blend my cuts from my first run and fairly confused. If you are having trouble making the cuts between obvious head, obvious hearts and obvious tails then ma...

My starting SG for my 18L wash was 1.090 at 96F. When it finished it was 0.991 at 73F. It took just over 2 weeks to complete then i let it sit for this last week. Stripping now . . .

Re: Goslings ressurection
Some yeasts are pretty famous for producing a lot of diacety(butter flavor)l, that might be a good place to start. I think they're mostly English ale yeasts. I've currently got some apple juice fermenting that just this morning started smelling very strongly of butter. I used us-04 yeast (dry Engli...

Goslings ressurection
Getting back into the sport, I've resurrected my affinity to find a Goslings clone. I found out that Goslings is actually a combination of three different recipes of Caribbean rum, blended together and then sealed again in second hand charred oak bourbon barrels with black sealing wax which is where...

First Birdwatcher batch
Friends- wanted to chime in that I've finished the ferment of my first birdwatchers recipe, but scaled down to 18L. OG was 1.090 @ 96F and FG is 0.991 at 70F. From what I've read here, I get the impression I'm right on target. I have a second batch going right now, started the 20th, and should be do...

Re: Planning a heavy RUMMMOMNOMNOM
With 8 years of aging, would you change anything in the original recipe? Frankly I don't think so, at least not for my first run. As a side note, I never did run the other half of the wash from back then, its still in about 7 sealed quart jars. Now, the conditions these have been through over the l...

Re: Planning a heavy RUMMMOMNOMNOM
OK, So I am digging this out after 8 years for a REASON. I found a very small amount of this run back in the back holes of my liquor cabinet, in a recycled bottle I had used, where its sat, forgotten, since 2012. There's about 4 oz left, not enough to test the ABV or anything else. Wish I could. I d...

Heres my aquarium valve stopper. It feeds a line into a water jar to check progress. Yes, not as easy as the other bungs, but this was free. More $$ for goodies, even if $2.99. Lol.

Re: A vinegar run is necessary but how do I get rid of the smell?
Is this a copper coil in a bucket? Before the new setup I was using a home-made copper coil in a lowes bucket. When I got some blue I put a cork/stopper in the bottom "output" hole and filled the coil with white vinegar and let it sit over night. Next morning put the setup in the laundry ...

Re: A vinegar run is necessary but how do I get rid of the smell?
Just broke my rig out of 8 years storage, consider myself a noob again. Did a water run today, then a vinegar water run [50/50 mix 80 oz total] then another water run. The pic is what i got out of the vinegar run. The water run subsequent was light blue at first, then clear. I was concetned about th...

Just moved onto my wifes family farm of 156 years. We have 20 acres we own, 18 of which are tilled. Since i am back into this hobby, and expanding into grains - predominantly managed sugar washes before - i have random access to corn piles that fall off the combine in the fields. So i can go out wit...

OK. Tossed . . . .
Reboot!
My birdwatchers recipe thats been fermenting a week seems to be doing okay.
This would have been ok had it not burned i guess. Thought maybe someone had a saving idea for stripping the burned smell.
Operator error.
Thanks @8ball.

WARNING: LOTSA IGNORANCE. Trying my hand at doing my first corn mash; a slight modification of NCHooch's recipe. I started with 7# cracked corn and 2# sweet feed to 5 gallons water. The closest thing i can come up with is it looks like a micro water heater wlement. The part in the jar is solid, but the tube on the lid is hollow like something fir in it, maybe similar to the electric skillets. GIS and other searches ive done have been fruitless.

Unknown antique jar device
I am thinking this jar had something to do with canning or making persimmon wine, but i have not been able to find anything on this device i found under the stairs in the basement of our old house. It seems to be missing some parts, and the lid is mostly rusted away. But the intriguing part is whats...
