Re: Photo gallery

Hi @ all! Yes, that would be a nice feature, most good ideas are found by looking at constructions, seeing details you haven´t yet thought of or searched for. At least that´s the case with me. One gallery I found: http://www.schnapsbrennen.at/anlagen.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);re...

Re: Vacuum still

So that would make it around 3000 €, quite a bit of cash and out of my limit right now :( One other thing keeps me wondering: Wouldn´t it make sense to apply a constant amount of energy to the wash though the use of a regulated valve for example? Using wash temps as reference, even if narrowly regul...

Re: Vacuum still

Ok, I grasp it I think... What were the approximate costs for the regulative set-up?

Fridge compressors are surprisingly powerful, either way, already used them for other applications successfully...

Congrats on your build!

Re: Vacuum still

Impressive! This is going to be a REALLY interesting thread, you have got my attention, to say the least... :) Wouldn´t you, IMHO, need some sort of sub-zero cooling liquid for the product condensor? A freezer-unit, or dry-ice cooled acetone e.g.? That´s what my physical understanding tells me... Wh...

Re: New keg pot still, built to order

Hi, my humble proposal:
Take a drilling machine with variable speed. Connect a SS chain to it. Insert the chain and off you go! Variation of speed will vary the height. Brutal, but effective..

Re: Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)

So, I am done, pimped my parrot to 15mm, hope, that does the trick. Hope, I don´t have to up-size the center-tube too, then building a new one would have been less work. And I would really like to keep the volume down. Well, it will take a while, till I can try it out, since I need my honey-extracto...

Re: Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)

@Emptyglass and AyAy: Thanks for your kind words and the link to the recipies, will definitely try some out. (already found them...) Nice collection, it´s about time to try something new... And yes, it´s a CM system. As mentioned, I tried aromatic runs too, had a little too high ABV´s though even wi...

Re: Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)

Hm... It is the first time that I can actually compare my outcome with others, used to be a stand-alone fighter till now and got unsure of my readings so I started a little research. Here is what I found: 1. I tested my aräometer/alcometer with bought 40% vodka and 95% denaturized etOH for ethanol s...

Re: Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)

I usually do pure sugar washes to produce tasteless etOH, using turbo-yeast from Sweden (Prestige). Theoretically goes up to 20 %, comes with nutrients/salts, less yeast-taste than Alcotec yeasts. Very difficult to remove, even with activated carbon or re-distilling. Portwine or bakers yeast work fi...

Re: My next and last still build

1. Sorry, I didn´t want to sound cocky. I was just trying to be helpful and failed with the same problem. Not my mother tonge. 2. I have absolutely no problem with the States, even lived and worked there for some time many years ago and enjoyed my stay there very much. Great country, nice people, st...

Re: My next and last still build

Whew, you see me flattened...so maybe I am not that much of a handyman after all or maybe there is something in the air in the States that makes EVERYTHING possible? The land of the "unlimited possibilities"? ;-) Did you grind it before to get rid of the (mostly through H3PO4) passified su...

Re: My next and last still build

Hi, sorry to disappoint you (if I understood you right), but soft-soldering copper/brass and stainless steel doesn´t work, not even with lots of heat and surface treatment. I know, what I´m talking of, I tried! See the barometer in the ss lid (AISI 410) of my still? Tried to solder a socket in at fi...

Re: Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)

Thanks, what really confuses me is is the performance of some of the posted stills, people put a lot of work in complicated designs (Boka-style, or even flutes with actual plates and even bubble caps) and are happy if they reach 90+ vol% in AGES! (10 to 12 hours???). They are counting drops??? It ta...

Re: Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)

Yeah, you are absolutely right. After a burning- and quick Beilstein-test (lots of copper in the garage) I found out it is P-PVC. That means: PVC is etOH-proof, BUT it contains a large amount of plastifiers such as Phtalates. Those are bound in physically, not covalent or ionic, into the polymereic ...

Re: Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)

Thats what I had to do before too (gave me a sore back and was time-consuming), so I came up with this Idea. Makes stow-away and camouflage easy, too and reduces the risk of breaking the glass tubes in the set-up process. I don´t know the exact material of the outlet hose i´m afraid. It is used for ...

Pics of my still (+some translated german explanations)
