Exactly what I was looking for, I used to use the calculator on the front page until it stopped working. I never knew how hard it was to find info on the 60 degree calibration hydrometers.
THANKS!

Re: Alcoholmeter
I have a number of 60 farenheit degree calibrated alcoholmeters, does anyone know of a free calculator or table for temperature correction. I'm able to find lots of 20 degree celcius calculators and tables, but no 60 degree farenheit calculators or tables.

Re: George Washington Rye?
I wouldn't worry about a sulfur smell. I brew a lot of beer and ciders, some yeasts produce sulfur some don't. They tend to gas the sulfur off given time, about two weeks.

Re: Slightly Scorched Rye
It's been oaked and is drinkable if mixed, just not up to my standard for sipping whiskey. I'll let it sit and see what happens.

Slightly Scorched Rye
I slightly scorched a batch of rye whiskey and am curious, can I just turn it into neutral. Will the scorched flavor carry over in a neutral distillation?

Re: Wheat or rye?
Torrified, malted or flaked wheat all taste similar but different. I know that's not much help. Adding the malted wheat would allow the corn to be mashed/converted quicker, but I've mashed 75% raw grain with 25% 6 row barley and it converts, just takes longer, 90 minutes approx. In other words any o...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
1.010 is good, especially after 6 gens, run it. Some beer finishes quite a bit higher than that.

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
BigBird, no problem. We're cool. On your last question, your wash will end up different, not saying good or bad, just different. Different amount of backset, percentage wise, and a different amount of grain. If you've been adding new grain each generation, then no harm, just more grain. It may cause...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
I had a great weekend also, beer stripped my 1st gen 30 gal. batch, 12-13 gal. one day 12-13 gal. the second day. Was very happy with the taste, almost like my AG recipe. I'll see what it's like after I do a spirit run with feints from my AG. Have to finish my 2nd gen 30 gal. batch, then a 10 gal. t...

Thanks RBL, that's the kind of feedback I am seeking and maybe a little more on what differences to expect in flavor.

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
LOL, BigBird, I'd like to thank you for being so welcoming. If you'll read my post, it's UJSSM with barley and wheat subbed for half the corn, seems I've read quite a few substitutions (page 134 with oats and many others further back) that didn't receive your welcoming comments. I've been doing cook...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
BTW, I've found beer recipe software does a good job of calculating predicted O.G. Should work for sour mash if you lower the mash efficiency to 30% or so and enter your sugar as extract.

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Trying my first batch of sour mash, have been doing cooked mashes. Used the same recipe, but increased for 30 gallon size, 16# corn, 8# malted 6-row Barley, 8# Hard Red Wheat, 32# white sugar. Used 25% backset from cooked mash to get pH down to 4.8. Anyone done both mash types and have comments on t...

Re: 2" column Nixon Stone puking
That's exactly what was going on, too much power. Measured with a normal voltmeter and clamp-on ammeter, anything over 101.7 volts and 9.92 amps (1009 watts) flooded the column. When I measured that same level with a True-RMS voltmeter/clamp-on ammeter, voltage was 141.2 and amps 13.1 (1850 watts). ...

Re: 2" column Nixon Stone puking
I wondered about the true RMS issue. Is that applicable to both voltage and amps or just voltage? The controller is the cats meow, I can dial in whatever I want from 5500 watts to practically 0. I know the setting that it is running the best, I'll grab some meters from work and report back what true...

Re: 2" column Nixon Stone puking
It was 101.7 volts and 9.92 amps for 1009 watts. I'm wondering if it was wrong to measure the volts where I did, across the leg with the triac in it. If I took 9.92 times 240 you get 2380, that would make sense in more ways than one, then at the higher levels I could see why it would be flooding. At...

Re: 2" column Nixon Stone puking
built a controller and measured voltage and amps to get watts. I agree, 750 shouldn't be overloading it. I've got 28" of 6mm rasching rings, can't figure out how they could become too packed. I've pulled off foreshots and heads, going to shut down for tonight and add water tommorrow to make sur...

Re: 2" column Nixon Stone puking
I've backed off the reflux and its settled down at 15 mL per minute. Don't know how the rasching rings could get packed too much. I wondered about running 53% but Ian smiley's book was running 70%. I'll be running 40% or under from now on.

Re: 2" column Nixon Stone puking
pretty sure my reflux valve and tube leading back into the column doesn't have enough flow and is flooding the offset head. When I opened up take-off valve wide open drew off 400 mL in a solid stream. That should have been in the column through the reflux valve.

15.5 gallon keg boiler, 5500 watt heating element, heat to boil in about 30 minutes. this run is 9 gallons of 53%. this is my first reflux run, I've ran this still many times in pot still mode, just never in reflux.
