forgotten to make first cuts

For the first time ever I have forgotten to take off the the first 50 ml of distillate. Can I put it back in the still and then discard the first 50 ml or do I need to do more than that?

Re: Cornflakes whiskey

I have made two lots of this and is one of the best! I make ten litres and age it in an oak barrel for six months. Awesome and much appreciated by my friends!
Thank you Odin.

Re: Cornflakes whiskey

Hi Odin
I use Fleischmans bakers yeast for a sugar wash. Will it be ok for the cornflake whisky?

Re: What to dilute with?

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to reply and comment. I think I am going to trial small quantities for taste with different water. I have distilled a small amount of water, have a filter jug for the tap water and am going to try and purchase some ro water and then see what tastes best. ...

Re: What to dilute with?

Thanks Chauncey.
It's not easy to get distilled water in the UK. Can get deionised easily, but not distilled. I guess I could make some myself though.

What to dilute with?

My (very tasty) gin is ready to dilute. Tap water or bottled or doesn't it make any difference? I'd be grateful for any comments.

Chamomile?

Has anyone a recipe that includes chamomile? I was thinking of a basic gin recipe with juniper, angelica and coriander and adding chamomile but not sure of quantities. I vaporise my botanicals, not infuse.

White cloudy gin

I have made three lots of gin. In the first two I used licorice in the botanicals. When I added tonic water to these the gin went white - like adding water to ouzo. When I looked online it said this was due to using licorice or anise in the botanical mix. In this third go, I left out the licorice an...

Re: Backset - what exactly is it?

Thank you Otis and fizzix. That makes it really clear now, but leads me to another question. If I save the backset from this run and then use it in the next fermentation, can I mix (blend?) the two whiskies or should I keep them separate?

Backset - what exactly is it?

Hiya
Can someone tell me exactly what backset is? Am I right in thinking that this is the lower end of the distillation run i.e about 20%abv?
I want to try Odin's cornflakes whisky, but want to make sure I am going to do it right.
Thank you.

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Thanks for the info guys. Esxman, do you invert the sugar yourself? Do you use dextrose or ordinary cane sugar? Indian juniper sounds excellent!

Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

HI I am going to try Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe. If I use Fleischmann's Instant Dried Yeast instead of fresh yeast (he has 225 gramms for an 80 l wash) how much yeast do I need? Online suggests to use a quarter of the amount of instant to fresh ie 65g, and then if I am going to do a 20l wash do ...

Re: Hi from the southeast or England

Thanks you to all who posted replies and to the advice. Being on holiday I have had time to read, read and read! Have learnt loads. Two more questions. 1. There is reference to a good recipe from Birdwash, but I cant find it anywhere! If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be a...

Hi from the southeast or England

Hello all - it should read southeast of England! We have been successful homebrewers of wine and beer for some years now, and wanted to expand into the art of distilling. We have built a pot still from a Prestige pressure cooker and have successfully made a 5 gallon wash and then distilled it, endin...
