sugar wash acidity

Sugar, and all about sugar washes. Where the primary ingredient is sugar, and other things are just used as nutrients.

sugar wash acidity

Post by partonken »

ive just started a sugar wash using 6 kg of sugar, 22 litres of water, 2 tsp of lemon juice, 2 tbsp of DAP, 1 small can of tomato paste, and 2 Tbsp of distillers yeast pre-started for 1 hour in luke warm water and sugar.

It has been sitting there for 2 days now, and still nothing. My acid is about 3, and im wondering if thats a bit too low. Some wine people aim for 3.5 so i think im close.

I airated the wort before starting.

any ideas? Thanks

Too much sugar? I shoot for 1 kg per gallon (4 liters) of water, which seems to work fine for me (knock on wood, no slow starts or stiuck's yet). I don't use tomato paste either though.

I have a grocery store here that carries a wonderful assortment of bulk foods - including wheat germ and instant yeast. 1 cup of wheat germ, a 1/4 cup of instant yeast and 1 tablespoon of Epsom Salt (total cost = $0.25USD) makes a good yeast energizer/nutrient combination.

Do have to add DAP and acid (lemon juice).

Turbo' s have all the nutrient already built in, it was unnecessary to add all the other stuff. Sugar/turbo an d water is all you need, having said that, I don't think all the extras would hurt.

Back to your question, check your fermenter is in fact air tight, I know it sounds stupid (and simple) but in the past I've had what I thought were failed ferments work out perfectly. I only discovered the fault because I opened up the fermenter to see what was going on and when I put the lid back on, it started bubbling like crazy, almost instantaneously.

Just a thought.

Is partonken using a Turbo?

If not, add 1 teaspoon/5 ml of Epsom Salt (MgSO4 = Magnesium Sulphate).

What kind of distiller's yeast did you use? Some people have said that certain kinds of yeast don't seem to do well with sugar washes. I use Lalvin EC-1118.

With the "loose airlock/lid" hypothesis, just look to see that the wash is fizzing (like soda).

And by the way, Coops, I still like your old avatar!  (Too bad for censorship)

Good point, I'm a dickhead :D , I must of just made it up! :D :D :D Sorry Partonken.

I just had another thought, does the "distillers yeast" that your using come from a health food shop? If so, it's not what the name implies, it's some sort of health food additive that contains no live yeasty beasties. As such, it would be doing nothing. Just buy bakers yeast from the supermarket and throw some in. I bet it kicks into life.
Apparently the live yeast thrives on "distillers yeast" as it contains dead yeast cells.

Once again....disregard my earlier gaff.

BW, believe it or not, my censorship sign was censored as well....I've gone with the safe option now.

distillers yeast

Post by partonken »

hey guys thanks in advance for the great advice! Im using distillers yeast from homebrew heaven in the USA. It comes in a 500 gram bag.

I just started a UJSM and i used the same yeast and its working just fine.

The yeast is called Super start distillers yeast and they claim it will get to 18 or maybe 20 % with nutrients!
