Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.
This is probably gunna sound like a really stupid question but id like to give uncle Jesse's sour mash recipe a go for the first run of my pot still as it looks like an easy way to start out.
My question is this. The recipe states ' 7 lbs (3.2kg) cracked corn. 6-8 pieces/kernel is the proper crack. If using bird feed, make sure it is perishable, or in other words is free of preservatives.' What is cracked corn and where can i get it? I dont understand that whole '6 to 8 pieces/kernal is the proper crack' business.... Is it just the corn you buy at the supermarket when you wanna make pop corn?
I told ya it was a stupid question!!!
Cracked corn is corn broken into pieces. Look for cracked corn at feed store . here ya can buy it that was for chickin feed. http://homedistiller.org/grain/wash-grain" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Yes, it should be preservative free. Over there, they may call it cracked maize.
Here in the states, they use soy oil to knock down dust, keep it from clumping and helps preserve it. Haven't had any problems using it.
I usually toss the 7 pounds in a big ol' pot of hot water for a few seconds to wash the oil, cob and other junk out of it. (Get a grey/green foam that I skim off the top)
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.
Valved Reflux, 3"x54" Bok 'mini', 2 liebig based pots and the 'Blockhead' 60K btu propane heat
yeah sometimes called cracked maize (its whats written on the side of the bag) but they will still know what your talking bout.. and it should be preservative free anyway i have never seen otherwise. and i have never had a problem with any oil or scum so i don't think they use oil here (do get lots of dust from the bag so i doubt it)...
get some barley while your there and some molasses (all up should set you back about $85) and your SET..
you could try and malt your own barley as i am just finding out how easy it really is..
the hardest part is drying the grain after malting but i have an idea using an old clothes dryer for that but now I'm really way off topic and rambling so I'm shutting up
Whiskey, the most popular of the cold cures that don't work (Leonard Rossiter)
Hehe absinthe! Here in oz i went to the Aminal Tukkerbox (stock feed and pet supplies) and asked for cracked corn. "For the chooks?" (that should mean it's OK for general consumption)..."Yeah" . $30+/25Kg.
It works. It is a corn kernel cracked into about 6 parts more or less plus a lot of weevils, cob and dust. These can be floated off with a quick rinse before adding to the fermenter...but if youre not bothered the yeast seems to like them a lot and will eat them all.

thats the ticket.. although mine comes without the weevils now all you need is some enzyme and a steam cooker and then your set for some dam fine corn whiskey

I used cracked corn for making U.J.S.S.M. which is a sour mash method of fermenting & I suppose distilling also.
Some batches of corn would have tiny little beetles in it. I couldn't get them all out so I used it & fermented it as is -
The yeast seemed to eat most of them (not their shells).
Anything that floated was easy to remove with a strainer so I got rid of the floaters.
The corn liqueur came out as normal with no taint.
Hope this helps you all in he future.
BTW I just realized this technique is no good for Vegans )
