New to the forum

Post by pyratesurgeon »

Grand day and well met,

Through distracted wandering upon the Net, I stumbled upon this site and must admit some shock. Glad to find that there are others who like to 'discuss the science and theory' of distillation.
For myself, perhaps it's in the genes, seeing as certain ancestors were rum-runners and bootleggers back East, I've always had an interest in the art of brewing. Mom never let me forget about the purple stain up the wall when my grape juice wine ferment exploded...

What started out as a growing dissatisfaction with off the shelf rums and blending my own from store-bought, has grown into an investigation what goes into the creation of a palatable Rum. Cane vs. molasses, aging and the use of pre-used barrels, ect.

Now pull up a firkin and let's chat! :D

Thanks for the kind welcome, olddog.

I've been doing some 'dabbling'. Mostly with micro batches and then aging or infusing various style oak chips to see what comes about. Lots of learning to do, I'm sure.

Welcome aboard, there seems to be about as many different ways to do rum, as there are members on this forum.

If rum is your game your in for a long trip and a lot of debates.

Vegemite is a trap. I heard it has all sorts of insidious side effects, like reducing the testosterone levels in male consumers.

Sorry lad, it happens to be Mrs. Pyrate. And don't worry about hijacking--like another site the husband belongs to, your talking about the main subject at hand and then it gets hijacked by the mention of 'ethanol substances'...

As I've mentioned on another thread, I've been...'dabbling'--very small batches. Been turing out some passable runs. Tastes better when it's been aged.

:D Again, not a problem. As a matter of curiosity, are there many female brewers/distillers about?

It is mostly men folk.

And thats too bad.

I think women have a keen nose, good pallet and an eye for detail.

We have a few that have come and gone, but could prolly count em on no more than a hand full of fingers.
