Extracting essential oil from limes

Post by rednose »

I coudn't find a section to post about this theme so off topic should be ok, even if that's the only legal reason to have a still in most countries (less the one where I live :P ).

Today I made the first run with a special designed boiler for extracting essential oils.

I loaded it with 50 Kg of third class quality lemon (own harvest) and got a reasonable quantity of oil out. :D

It's in the freezer now to separate it a little more from the water.

I had several leaks in the lid of the boiler, the material to screw it together didn't arrive yet.

I used highest power with a big 80.000 BTU propane burner.

Any comments wellcome.

if you ran that fruit through a press after extraction you might have another product on your hands.

Wow, thanks for the link Kiwi, I'll try the lemon wash for sure.

I throw the complete fruits in because I was too lazy to peel 1500 limes and staffs where busy with other work.

Final plan, beside of the oil, is to ferment the juice and make vinegar which has a good demand in France as I was reading.

That is a future plan and many local agro folks will be involved, some kind of social service, lol.
