My mother-in-law showed up today as I was smack dab in the middle of a run. Was running some 2nd gen DWWG made with brown sugar and a 1 gallon stalled agave wash thrown in to finish fermenting. When I was charging the still I added a gallon of rum feints.
She knew I was doing it she'd just never seen any of it. I run my still in the kitchen which is where you walk in when you enter through the side door. Her first words were "O'my". It was quite amusing watching my wife go through and explain each of the pieces and how each one worked. I could see her interest was getting peeked so I asked her to try some rum been sittin on wood for about a month. She agreed and I poured her a half-shot and cut it. She shot it and proclaimed it was good then proceeded to say she doesn't even like rum but she liked this. By the time she got ready to leave she was asking bout all them jars so I offered her some to take home. What I had up on the counter was 65% and I asked if she wanted me to cut it. She said, naw, I'll take it like that and "cut-it" at home. I'd call that success.
hahahaha. I have an older relative, church going lady . Been a holy roller since I knew her. My sister let it slip that I was making hooch and she was SHOCKED!
I was really embarrassed. She asked me a few questions, I told her just basically what kind of stuff I was making (UJSM at the time) and that I was using a copper pot still. Later, at the church having supper, she walked up to me and just matter of factly said...."you know...you might try using malt corn and run a doubler." She walked off and left me standing there in shock holding a piece of fried chicken up to my mouth!
