beer keg for rum storage
Proud to say that I'm running out of pantry space.
I do not have a crawl space under my house.
Was going to use the spare keg for a larger dunder pit. But now the missus is giving me that crazy " why are you still making more likker" look. I'd like to use the extra keg (in the garage) for storage. But we get a routine 100 degree (F) heat index during the summer months.
I'd like to store at barrel strenth but am kinda scear'd.
Any thoughts on the matter.

Recon they'll map this as sex-linked when they complete the human genome (sp?) project? Women mite not be biologically capable of seeing this need to distill liquor as men see it. No disrespect to you women reading this, I'll be the first to sing the praises of a woman BUT you just don't read women on here bitchin 'bout their man asking them why must they make more liquor when we already got 27 gallons in various stages of aging, souring and/or macerating.LWTCS wrote: . . .missus is giving me that crazy " why are you still making more likker" look.
Sorry LWTCS, I get the dreaded STINK EYE myself. That's why I broke out the still at the first word of her 'leaving for the weekend'

I have all year long about 30C here and store my rum at 85% about in 300Ltr SS tanks.
They have a cork in one opening to have chance to "breeze".
You need that cork more than I as your outside temp varies during the seasons.

Do all my cookin when she ain't here.
She comes home on Friday nights to a house whafting with a rum wash getting devoured. Thats all the exposure I try to give her.
I try and keep drinkin volumes well stocked so she can't easily monitor the "flow rate".

Re: beer keg for rum storage
I live in the steamy tropics and store most of my finished rum in a stainless keg, with a double layer of coffee filter on the opening. Doesn't seem to be a problem. For longer term storage you might want to use a cork instead of coffee filter.

. she wont go lookin in the mower shed in kegs. also, wander bout how much oak sticks youd need to oak a keg propperly?
LWTCS, i just realised that i was gonna have to keep my sipin stock in something other than quart jars.

Re: beer keg for rum storage
If I had my druthers I'd like to start a three barrel solara type set up.
The keg would git me the first barrel topped. Then use the keg for topping the forthcoming barrels as well.
Don't know where the hell I'd put 3 barrels.....and don't know if my missus would still luv me long time if I aquired 3 barrels.

i just went back and read about the three barrel solara type set up that you was talking about.( i think that it was a posting with you and pint) that seames like the thing to do. after all, i aint no big drinker ,, so pony kegs would probabally be all that i could mess with.

Re: beer keg for rum storage
If you're worried about the keg blowing up from the spirit expanding in hot weather, add a pressure gauge to the keg, and keep an eye on it.
That said, as long as you leave some air space, the air can compress a lot before pressure will rise. Liquid can't compress, so don't fill it to the top. I doubt highly that you'll ever approach the pressures that a keg sees when used with beer. Add some oak to the keg, and any pressure changes will only help push the rum into and out of the wood. Been thinking of trying such a system myself.
You could also bury the keg under a tree or something and leave it for a year or three. Would make a great 4th of July, 2016 "surprise"

Pony keg would be more manageable too. I ain't getting any younger.
Cept I'm running out of room fast,,,,,,spent all my money on the build,,,,,,and the 52 liter is empty.

now that would be a good idea. since it would be under ground, it would be a little harder to sneek a little. i wander how you would seal something like that for long term underground storage?Barney Fife wrote:If you're worried about the keg blowing up from the spirit expanding in hot weather, add a pressure gauge to the keg, and keep an eye on it.

yea, them big ole kegs are heavy. plus,,, it would only take half as long to get a small keg full and set back for some ageing.LWTCS wrote:Pony keg would be more manageable too. I ain't getting any younger.

if you was willin to sacrifice a tri clamp, you could get a stainless steel "cap" and clamp that sucker on there, and probabally be good to go!LWTCS wrote:Yep.Mr.Spooky wrote:now that would be a good idea. since it would be under ground, it would be a little harder to sneek a little. i wander how you would seal something like that for long term underground storage?
