Aged results from the MAGIC FLUTE

Post by olddog »

It's now over six months since I built the original Magic Flute for a home keg based application. My regular ferment and distillation is UJSSM, and once aged on oak I bottle and label with the date of distillation and bottling after aging. I usually rotate my stock by drinking the oldest bottles in store, but I needed another bottle and instead of checking the date I just grabbed a bottle. It turned out to be one of the earliest bottles I distilled with the flute, WOW what a difference, the nose and taste were the best I had ever tasted, it was so clean and flavorsome. With the better separation from the Flute there was absolutely no smearing, it's definately the best yet.
I ferment UJSSM on a regular basis so there is no difference in any wash I put down, so the only variable is the still, I have made many still designs over the years, potstills, the Frankenstill, the Evil Twins etc, but the Flute out performs them all. :D :D :D :D

Amen to that brother.. I cant believe how good this baby works. I had a real old timer shinner try some of my flute hooch this past weekend.. He told me he thought that could maybe be some of the best he had ever tasted. he loved the smell also, that was the first sign.. He smelled it really good and looked at me with a big ole grin on his face.. I was beaming with joy...
OD Is the man in my book, if I would have not seen and read about his I would have never thought about building one of these baby's.

Looks like these flutes are going to turn into the new boka's. The more I read about them, the more I think I have to drop the hammer and start my own build. I'm happy with my current vm still and all, but between having the ability to adjust the number and spacing of plates and being able to run the thing pretty hard, it seems like the perfect hobby stillhead. My hat is off to those who came up with the idea and those who've helped advance the state of the art. I hope to do my part some day.

That's great news. Every time I see a photo of the Flute, I marvel at it's beauty. I sure wish I had some talent in that direction  Cheers, bd.

more flavor, higher proof....less heads, less tails...sounds perfect.

yep. i'm gonna have to do a version. i have to finish the 3"T first, but i'm really close to being done and i think it will be a great addition to the still family. got a couple ideas to try with it...

once i got the bubbler going, i can still use the 3"T to make vodka out of feints for the wife.
