Newbie

Post by corndog »

Just thought i would say hey to all! I have found me a new hobbie and will be using a pot still soon , to get started on, maybe build a bigger one later, as soon as it warms up more! Live in Mn , i will need all the help i can get! I have heard that turbo yeast is not all that great? if im trying to make corn spirits , [split corn and sugar mash] should i use distillers yeast or can i go to the store and get by with red dot or bread yeast, or is it the same? i have heard different opinions and i noticed that the turbo is kind of expensive?

Keep reading it's starting to come together.

Pot stills are a lot of fun -- you should enjoy it and you'll learn a lot. I ran a 7 gallon stove-top rig for about a year and made a whole lot of good liquor. You aint got to have a 15 gallon keg to make good liquor. With that said, I now run a 15 gallon keg. The setup and breakdown time is the same and the clean up time is the same as well. I figured I just as well get a little more liquor for the effort.

Folks use all different types of yeast. Many use standard bread yeast. Others use "specialty" yeast. My preference is EC-1118 -- hard working, clean fermenter. Try different ones and you'll find the one that suits you. Corn and sugar liquor sounds like the same path many have taken. If you haven't yet read up on the UJSSM thread in the Tried and True recipe section. A nice consistent wash that will allow you to get fermenting down as well as learn to make your cuts.

Turbo's aint worth going down that road.

good luck
