Cheers from Missouri

Post by jimstl99 »

New member here. Long time home brewer who has decided to try taking things to the next step. I have been interested in distillation for a long time but until now haven't acted upon it. I completely understand the mash process and how to correctly ferment having done 75+ batches of beers and hard ciders. It will be fun to try my hand at producing a quality grain spirit. I will most likely go the bourbon route and hopefully acquire a small oak cask or two. I am looking into pot stills, thinking that a 7 gallon should be good for now and in the future.

Cheers.

Welcome aboard neighbor. There is a fairly new micro distillery just west of St Joe in Atchison. They just released their first 2 year whiskey. Have been selling Most Wanted Vodka till now. Anyway there is a lot of good info around here. You just need to wade through it a couple three times and then read it a few more. LOL Good luck.

Hey Missouri, welcome aboard! If I read correctly, you can distill 200
gallons a year for your own personal consumption. Now that is a common
sense law. I am ready for the rest of the country to adopt more common
sense laws on what you can do at home. That's what this country was founded
on ( no offense Brits, I think your country AND your people are wonderful). I
bet George Washington made a killer Whiskey. Anyway, welcome aboard & good luck!!!

I would check this further, DarkCornerMtnMan. Not many countries allow distilling and I believe that the US is one of them, You might find that federal law will come into the equation. Two hundred gallons a year for personal consumption seems like a rather large consumption rate, but I may be wrong.

I'm not trying to tell you US law and certainly not Missouri law - I am from Australia so I may be very wrong and if so I apologise - but it may pay you to check this out further. Again, if I am incorrect I apologise.

I don't know what you are reading that told you that you can distill 200 gallons for personal use. If you are talking the US. Home distillation of alcohol for drinking is illegal. You can brew 100 gallons per person up to 200 per household of beer or wine for personal use. If allowed by your local govment some citys countys and states have also band that. But you can't legally distill it to drink. You mite want to do some more research on that darkcornermntman.

about the state law.
http://www.moga.mo.gov/statutes/c300-399/3110000055.htm

Allegedly the 200 gal is correct. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if the state means it too. This state has a lot of wineries, anheuser busch, boulevard, McCormick Vodka, and probably would like to have more liquor taxes rolling in too. However. here is the kick in the balls.

It's illegal by way of the federal government, so I still wouldn't go running around with your still and post pics of it on Facebook. Use common sense; Just because the missouri highway patrol won't kick in your door doesn't mean the BATF won't.

Washington State is the only state I am aware of that has changed any laws. I am not sure what they are but I know some of there laws have changed to make it much easier to become a micro distiller. It is illegal to distill any alcohol what so ever in the USA entirely with out proper permits.
Do not make the mistake of thinking you can legally distill any amount with out permits.

And unless you are going commercial the only permits you can get are for making fuel only. That also gives them the authority to inspect your stuff any time they want to for illegal operation as in producing drinking alcohol.

That reference of MO laws is a small portion of a larger bill that is mainly geared twords commercial operations. That paragraph was just put in there to cover people who legally brew alcohol under federal laws so they wouldn't be classified with the commercial company's. Most states have the same thing in their books. Just worded slitely different. But it comes back to the federal laws always override the state and local laws.
