Re: whered you come from???
It's kinda hard to trace your roots when you were adopted just after birth. I found paperwork after my adopted mom past. She always told me I was Irish. Birth name of Briney. I carry a German name. And grew up in a house with an English name.

Irish/Cherokee on my dads side.. and German / dutch on my moms side.. My dad family is originally from the hills in Kentucky. They had a family farm that was flooded to form Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake by the corps of engineers.

in the old days, there would be a "sketchy" history writen in the family Bible. i remember from child hood, that my grandmother from my moms side, had a Bible that was about 8" thick with all kinds of stuff in it. but that side of the family was a buncha crazies.
come to think about it, the most that i know of my dads side was alcoloholisim.

I have 3 of those bibles. But they are all from my adoptive families.
It's one of those things that I would like to research. But its very low on the priority list. I have better things to do. Like finish this still. So my grandchildren can pass along that I was a crazy old moonshiner.

Re: whered you come from???
Scots/Irish on my fathers side. Not sure on my mother's side other than some Cherokee and European decent. My father's side is traced and documented back to the mid 1700's when my Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather ( that's 17 Greats) came over from Ireland with his 2 brothers. His decendent's spread west from Virginia scattering around the Ozarks and Oklahoma while one branch established themselves as a prominent family in Kentucky. My family name has been traced back to around 10 generations before he came over, back into feudal times and the original clan my name comes from.

Re: whered you come from???
Both parents were from Italy. Came over in the 1950s. My paternal grandfather left his village when my father was 6 years old. Landed in New York in the 30s as an illegal immigrant and stayed an illegal until he died. He was a painter and used to brag that he could paint faster with a brush than others could with a roller. Small victories, I guess.
Before he died, he moved up into Canada and bought a little motel near Niagara falls. He then called for his son, my father, to come over to help him out. By then he had throat cancer from smoking like a chimney. All I remember of him was a little hole he had in his throat that he talked out of. The motel went bust and the family moved to Toronto. In the meantime, the rest of my father's siblings also immigrated to Canada, stayed a short while and then headed to California with my grandfather. I still have family there, in theory. My grandfather is buried there.
There's an odd story my father used to tell how my grandfather tried twice to get to America. The first time he was caught without papers, and sent back. The second time, the story goes, he jumped from the ship before it landed on Ellis Island and swam onto the shores of Manhattan. It's conceivable because he was from an ocean side village in Southern Italy, and they were all great swimmers. Obviously, I can't know if this is true, although I do doubt it. True or not, I do think about that story now and again and wonder what drove him to leave his family and his birth place. He wasn't the typical economic refuge common at that time. They were a middle class family, when middle class meant something. He left for reasons unknown. He remains an enigma. But here I am, on an island below sea level, making likker

Re: whered you come from???
My father just don't talk about it, don't know why, except that my great grand dad was from Ireland and was a railroad engineer. I have his railroad watch. My praternal granddad was a farm hand in Iowa, my maternal granddad was a garbage collector. On the maternal side I got an uncle who has spent most of his life researching the family and he has stacks of stuff. Ancestors include Robert E. Lee, Martha Washington, and Zebulon Pike, so I'm tol'. Lot a shady characters too, mostly from Wyoming. My mother is from the LaPashe family line and there was a pedofile that messed her and some other relatives up real bad. When I was in my 40's my uncle finally sat down with me and told me some stories. Finally understood some things about all the s*** I went through growin' up. Sometimes it can be real important knowing some things about your past.

Re: whered you come from???
My roots come from the clan Ewan (My Motto: Riveresco)... I was born in Argyll. Most of my clan were driven out to Ulster and then to the US after the 1745 uprisings, but according to history, many had gone before them. They were Bards and chief-less, given the protection of all clans, they were the community who supplied song, dance and drink for most highland ceilidh's (gatherings). Can't give too much away, but I'm very proud that my ancestors settled in most parts of the world. When I don the plaid (kilt) and go home to Argyll, a warm welcome that is hard to comprehend, is always bestowed upon me and my family... People I've only just met, talk as if I'd known them for years...
Good luck on your search...
Its a great pastime Spooky, but it can get very expensive as you dig deeper. Most of my roots were found in parish records...Good luck on your search...

Re: whered you come from???
Learning about family is interesting.
My wife has been with ancestry.com for a few years and found them very helpful.
Her maiden name seemed as though it may have been from Cornwall in England.
However it turned out that her ancestor (paternal, great-great-grandfather, I think; or one further back) came to Australia from Ticino canton in Switzerland (Swiss Italian).
And her family name is pretty much unique, there are a few others in Australia from the same line and some in the USA with the same name, don't know how they got the name.
Her family got the name because of a mis-spelling of the old fellow's Italian name when he got to Australia.
And she would not have had that family name if her great grandmother had not had a baby to a married man and given the son her own name.....
And between us we also have ties to Scotland, England, Ireland; I think that is about all.
PS And Germany.

My surname's family traces back to coastal N.C in 1740,Before that, London. The "Original" served as a Colonel in the American Revolution. Being a Colonel actually meant he had a gun and a horse. My Mothers Grandmother was a Cherokee that disappeared in the Fancy Gap/Bear Trail area of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to escape the "Trail of Tears march" and resettlement of the Cherokee Nation.Do a Google search on the Trail of Tears, and get a whole new perspective on being "helped " by the Government.

I am a 10th cousin of Queen Elizabeth on my dad's mother's side of the family and didn't even get an invite to the royal wedding
My dad's dad's father came from Austria, but the area was on the border and it is a bit muddled between Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

Spanish on my fathers side. English on mothers. We've been here since the 1850's gold rushes. My children have convict ancesters (Port Arthur, Tasmania) from my first wife. They say he stole a loaf of bread, but I'm bloody positive he was a mass murderer or worse.
