Hangover Question

Post by the_bard »

If i drink a few pints (4 or 5) of lager or beer - guaranteed a hangover.

If i drink half a bottle of vodka (0.5L) - not a twinge.

How come ?

Uh, distillation and cuts. That's why we're here.

My question is. Why is it I can drink can beer all nite and not get a headache. But if I drink one glass from a keg of the same kind of beer my head feels like its going to explode?

The only difference is that most kegged beer is not pastuerized. That's why draft always tastes better. Doesn't explain the headache. Overcarbonation? Brain freeze? :eh:

I hear the gas can contribute to that on the tapped beer. Dunno how true that is.

cos theres all sorts of stuff in the beer.

compare white wine and red. youll get a much(!) worse hangover from the red.

personally i think i am allergic to something in red, as only a couple of glasses will give me a headache straight away. every body will have similar reactions to other things i different degrees.

and as smokehouse shiner says, the spirit is distilled, and the heads and tails are removed.

have you noticed that getting drunk on commercial vodka actually feels different to getting drunk on beer? and getting drunk on a good neutral is different to getting drunk on commercial vodka?

imagine the above, but without the alcohol. if you were to drink that much beer, but without the alcohol, i doubt you would think the buzz was all that fun. it would probably feel pretty awful. that right there my friend is your hangover.

dehydration caused by alcohol also concentrates your blood. this means that there are effectively even more of these nasties per pint of blood, making the whole thing worse.

see what you do to your poor body?

i have been behind bars since i was old enough to lift a glass, and have seen a lot of hangovers, a lot of idiot stories, and served a hell of a lot of mornin coffee!

dunno about in the us of a , but over here in blighty, all lagers that come in in the keg are pasteurized.

i do happen to know that there is more co2 in a keg pint than a can though. obviously the co2 is added on site, and thus is pumped in at a rather arbitrary pressure determined my how knackered the equipment is, how long the lines are etc etc.

its also shifted throught the line using a pneumatic clicker pump, and the lines often arent perfectly smooth, both of which can pressurize and depressurize the beer as it moves, changing the co2 levels.

then we have the glass. there is usually a headsaver on the bottom of the glass. a roughened nucleation point that forms bubbles, and stops the head from collapsing. this makes the beer fizzier without extra gas, and makes the beer taste sweeter to start with more of a bitter aftertaste from the free co2.

the taste of a supposedly uniform product can change quite a lot from one pub to another.

ill stick with the real ales!

I have heard that to. I could take that if it was only with a CO2 pressurized system. But even with a cheap tap that pumps air into the keg it still hits me.

And yes I meant to say Smoke hit the nail on the head.

Who you gona offend sissy boy? Yourself? I'm not a beer drinker by any means. But I will partake every once in a while. I prefer whiskey or other hard likkers.

not bein funny, but it could also just be psychosematic.

jus a bad association somewhere in there.

i'm the same with newcastle brown ale. got smashed on it once as a kid, and woke up to a nurse pumping my stomach. now there's an experience!

ever since, i shudder just seeing the label, and the smell makes we wanna retch. images of a butch nurse pushing a tube up my nose...... *shudders*

but i can drink other brown ales no problem. strange the way your mind works eh?
