This place is like crack!!! Very addictive!!!
Very glad I found this site!!! The more I read and learn, the less I feel I know. While initially frustrating, it's the best feeling in the world for me, as it's a new challenge to master.
My wife is less than thrilled, as she knows every couple of years I like to pick up a new less than legal hobby, and as a result spend every waking moment learning about the hobby, then I tend to drop a whole lot of cash into toys for the hobby.... Only hobby I had she did not complain about was when I got her and the kids free sat TV for many years. Somehow I don't think an argument of "Hey the kids will have an endless supply of rum" is going to work as well as "Hey the kids get Disney and all the other kid shows for free" LOL
Thanks to all those that have given me a ton of info to read, digest, and learn from. I am sure that in 6 months to a year, I will have a lot of information to contribute to those that come behind me. For now I am just glad to have a new learning ground.

It is a good thing I am an early riser, allows me to spend more time on the forum as my wife also knows I am addicted to the hobby and the forum!

Hi my name is Mr. Piss and I'm a HD junky to.
My wife hated the ideas and cursed me every time she found one of my receipts. She thought it would be like many of my hobbies in the past. Spend a bunch o money to give it up a year later. Until she took a sip of my first All Bran. Now she is pushing me to stay with it and do more. I live my wife.

At least you have a wife that drinks. Mine doesn't, which is great in some ways as I always have a sober ride. No so great in others as she hates to see bar tabs and such... LOL

My wife didn't drink either -- until I started stillin. Now we both enjoy a cocktail a couple of evenings a week. Every now and then she will make the comment, "I could get used to this" and then takes another swig.

My wife loves the Malibu (essence based) I make, so I do that eventhough ... I hate working with essences! But, hey, it gives me a chance to make more other drinks as well! And since the family in law loves the whiskies & vodkas, I am in the right spot with this addiction! Yeah, addictive it is!

+1 on the whisky and vodka. With my vodka I like to experiment with essences or the more preferred infusions. The ones that are ok but not drinkable on a regular basis can be put over ice cream! How is that for being addicted?Odin wrote:My wife loves the Malibu (essence based) I make, so I do that eventhough ... I hate working with essences! I just did Malibu 4 the first time the other day. 1 cup dessicated coconut, 3.25 cups vodka, 1 tsp vanilla essence. 48 hours in the jar. strained it twice and added a bit of sugar syrup. voted unanimously as good or better than bought stuff.Odin wrote:My wife loves the Malibu (essence based) I make, so I do that eventhough ... Frozen,
What does "dessicated" mean? And how do you achieve that with a coconut? Not trying to be a smart ass. Just trying to make sure I understand how you do it ...

Sorry Odin...don't know how they desiccate a coconut. I would guess it involves dehydrating and milling into a powder?
In any case, I wanted to chime in to and admit my guilt to be totally obsessed with this hobby and this site. My wife doesn't drink and has a SUPER sensitive sense of smell and taste (which is why dinner is always bland
). The slightest smell of a wash or vapor from the still she loses it. I've been building a brew room in my basement cuz of it.
Rough plumbing done yesterday. Rough wiring will be done today. Maybe start building cabinets tomorrow.

Dessicated Coconut, is the dried shredded coconut that you can buy in packets at the supermarket for baking with. - Little dry white flakes of coconut
Hope that helps.
Just a note - dont ever try to do a hot infusion of coconut - you will get more flavour, but the spirit will cloud and you will spend the rest of your life filtering the fats out of it!

"hot infusion" does that just mean fresh coconut ? or is there actual heating involved ? thanksfrozenthunderbolt wrote:Just a note - dont ever try to do a hot infusion of coconut - you will get more flavour, but the spirit will cloud and you will spend the rest of your life filtering the fats out of it!
Just to stay on topic, Never tried crack, but if it's anything like the HD forums, i'm not sure i have time for a second hobby right now !!!
