Another New Kiwi on board

Post by Wards Best Bitter »

Hi guys and girls,
Having lurked on here aand read the important stuff I thought it high time I tried my hand at distilling. I am looking to use a reflux still but I am all fingers and thumbs and do not have the skill to make my own. Advice would be appreciated as to which models are value for money and more importantly which provide the best end result.
I am thinking of the Euro 30 still or a turbo 500 but have not looked at others. I would appreciate advice as to which I should go for. Are second hand ones generally munted.
Best wishes to all Wards Best Bitter. 8)

Wecome to the forum, we have a couple members in your area that might be willing to build a still for you, probably better than the two you have listed. If you do a search for those on this site you can probably read what other members here think of them as we have several members that have bought those same stills. Good Luck :D

Thanks for the warm welcome to this site guys and for the advice given. It seems that a still made up by an expert is the way to go If possible would like to contact an expert in New Zealand who might be willing to sell me a proper still, either used or made up. Best Regards WBB

What kind of booze do you want to make - neutrals and vodka's, or flavoursome spirits like rum brandy and whisky? The two require differnt still heads to do the optimal job. A pot still (with or without a thumper) or a flute are the best for whiskeys rum's etc, where as one of the simplest and most bullet proof designs for neutral is a bok style reflux still.
Do you want to use gas or electric heat, what height restrictions do you have? What are you willing to spend? How much drink do you want to produce?
The more you share, the more you are likely to get someone to chime in
Where has all the rum gone? . . .

Welcome aboard. That's all we need another kewl person around.

All I will say is don't trust what the homebrew shops will tell you. Same goes for internet sales companys. There are some that are in it for the right reason. But there are also some that are lower then sum. Read up on various designs. Get a informative view of what you are looking for. If it sounds to good. More then likely it is. I'm not saying don't trust anybody. I'm just saying don't make a spare of the moment decision. Get the info and ask someone around here what they think. What's it gona hurt? Maybe an extra day for the purchase. No biggy. Better safe then sory.
